OX40L은 OX40(CD134 또는 TNFRSF4)의 배위자이며 DC2(수상세포[1]아형), 대식세포 [2]활성화된 B림프구[3]같은 많은 항원 제시 세포에서 안정적으로 발현된다.

반면 OX40 분자는 활성화된 T 림프구(주로 CD4+ T 세포)[4]의 표면에 존재하지만 NK 세포,[5] NKT [6]세포 및 [6]호중구에도 존재한다.OX40-OX40L의 결찰은 T세포의[6] 생존 신호원이며 메모리 T세포[7]발달을 가능하게 한다.분자통한 [1][8]신호화는 IL-4 사이토카인의 수치가 낮은 환경에서도 Th2 면역 반응에 대한 분극으로 이어진다.
