7-PET는 K.W. 벤틀리에[1] 의해 발견되었으며 강력한 오피오이드 진통제로 중량 기준 모르핀의 효력 300배에 달한다.[2]주로 코끼리, 기린, 코뿔소 등 큰 동물을 진정시키는 데 사용되는 매우 강력한 동물성 진통제와 마취제로 사용되는 좀 더 잘 알려진 오리파빈 유도체 오피오이드 에토핀과 관련이 있다. 7-PET 자체에는 3-O-메틸에테르가 있어 효력이 감소하지만 3-OH 유도체는 약 2200배이다.ine, μ 작용제로서 에토핀과 거의 같은 효력이며,[3][4] 뜻밖에도 3-데산 화합물도 2000배 모르핀과 거의 같은 효력이다.[5]

그러나 7-PET는 에토핀과 달리 불법 마약은 아니며 UN의 약물 규약에 따라 통제되지는 않지만, 미국, 캐나다, 호주, 뉴질랜드 등 일부 관할지역에서 관련 화학구조를 이유로 여전히 에토핀의 통제 물질 아날로그로 간주될 수 있다.
