교통섬은 교통을 통제하는 도로의 고체 또는 도색 물체다. 그것은 또한 예각으로 교차하는 도로들 사이의 좁은 섬 띠가 될 수 있다. 섬이 도로표지만 사용하는 경우, 솟아오른 굴곡이나 다른 물리적 장애물이 없다면, 페인팅된 섬 또는 (특히 영국에서는) 유령섬이라고 불린다. 교통섬은 자동차 운행 속도를 줄이거나 도로를 건너는 보행자들에게 중심적인 피난처를 제공하는 데 이용될 수 있다.[1]

일부 교통섬은 보행자들의 피난처가 될 수도 있다.[3] 교통섬은 종종 교통안전이나 교통정체 등의 이유로 자동차가 위험할 가능성이 있는 결과를 가지고 코너를 절단하는 것을 방지하거나 일부의 움직임을 완전히 방지하기 위해 뒷골목의 부분 블라인드 교차로에서 사용된다.[4]

영국의 특정 지역, 특히 미드랜드에서는 섬이라는 용어가 우회로를 뜻하는 동의어로 자주 사용된다.[5]
