미국 자유주의자들은 미국에서 현대 자유주의의 지지자들이다. 이 이념은 시민 자유와 평등의 사상과 사회 정의에 대한 지지와 혼합 경제를 결합한다. 이안 아담스에 따르면 미국의 모든 주요 정당들은 "자유주의적이고 항상 그래왔다"고 한다. 본질적으로 그들은 민주주의화된 휘그 입헌주의와 자유시장을 더한 고전적 자유주의를 지지한다. 차이점은 사회적 자유주의의 영향과 함께 온다.[1]

경제적으로 현대 자유주의는 사회안전망 삭감에 반대하며 불평등 감소, 교육 제공, 의료 접근 보장, 경제활동 규제, 자연환경 보호 등에서 정부의 역할을 지원한다.[2] 이러한 자유주의의 형태는 20세기 미국에서 프랜차이즈와 다른 시민권이 더 큰 계층의 시민으로 확대되면서 형성되었다. 대표적인 예로 시어도어 루즈벨트의 스퀘어 딜과 뉴 내셔널리즘, 우드로 윌슨의 뉴 프리덤, 프랭클린 D 등이 있다. 루즈벨트의 뉴딜, 해리 S. 트루먼의 공정 거래, 존 F. 케네디의 뉴 프론티어와 린든 B. 존슨의 대사회.

20세기 전반 미국의 주요 정당들은 모두 보수당과 진보당을 가지고 있었다. 보수적인 북 공화당과 남민주당은 민권 이전 시대에 의회를 지배했던 보수 연합을 형성했다. 존슨 대통령 휘하의 민주당이 민권을 지지하기 시작하면서, 이전의 솔리드 사우스(Solid South)는 흑인 유권자가 많은 지역을 제외하고 확고하게 공화당이 되었다. 1960년대 이후 민주당은 진보주의로, 공화당은 보수주의로 여겨졌다. 집단으로서 진보주의자를 좌익, 보수주의자를 우익이라고 한다. 21세기부터 밀도가 높고 이질적인 공동체에서 사는 경향이 있는 진보파와 밀도가 낮고 균일한 공동체에서 사는 경향이 있는 보수파 사이에 첨예한 분열도 있었다.[3][4]
