이 유전자는 팔반복(아르마딜로)과 플라코필린 유전자의 일원을 암호화한다.플라코필린 단백질은 수많은 아르마딜로 반복을 포함하고, 세포 데스모솜과 핵에 국재하며, 세포 골격의 중간 필라멘트에 카드헤린을 연결하는 데 관여한다.이 단백질은 데스모솜 형성 동안 분자 모집과 안정화에 관여할 수 있다.이 유전자의 돌연변이는 외배엽 이형성/^[6]피부 취약성 증후군과 관련이 있다.
