역사

1861년 7월, 미국 의회는 에이브러햄 링컨 대통령에게 더 빨리 제대하지 않는 한 3년 동안 복무할 50만 명을 소집할 것을 승인했다.버몬트 제3보병대는 이 소집의 결과로 현장에 배치된 주로부터 3년간의 연대 중 두 번째 연대였다.스프링필드, 코번트리, 뉴베리(웰스 리버), 찰스턴, 존슨, 하트포드, 세인트의 민병대 기업들로부터 조직되었다.존스베리, 세인트 알반스, 귀드홀, 그리고 이스트 몽펠리어와 칼라이스.[1]

Governor Erastus Fairbanks' first choices to command the regiment were Colonel John W. Phelps, soon to relinquish his command of the 1st Vermont Infantry, Captain Truman Seymour, 4th U.S. Artillery, a native Vermonter who had been present at the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter, and Captain A. 연대는 1861년 7월 25일 워싱턴 D.C.에 도착하였고, 7월 27일 포토맥(Potomac)을 따라 체인 브리지(Chain Bridge)까지 진군하여 '캠프 라이온(Camp Lyon)'을 건설하였다.[2][3]그들은 제6 메인 보병대, 모트의 배터리, 그리고 기병대에 합류했다.8월 12일까지 버몬트 제2보병대와 뉴욕 제33보병대가 합류했다.

벨로우즈 폭포의 월터 W. 코크란 소령은 8월 6일 심한 발열과 화농으로 인해 임무를 사임했다.A사의 휠록 G. 비지 선장이 그를 대신했다.8월 13일 스미스 대령이 자원 봉사자의 준장으로 임명되었고, 하이드 대령이 그를 대신하여 지금은 완전 대령으로 임명되었다.비지는 중령으로, 토마스 오 대위는 중령으로 진급했다. F사의 Seaver는 소령으로 승진했다.[1]

역사상 '잠자는 보초'로 알려진 윌리엄 스콧 일병이 8월 31일 자신의 직책에서 잠든 채 발견돼 법정구속된 뒤 사형을 선고받은 것도 이곳이었다.링컨 대통령은 이 사건에 대해 듣고 스콧을 사면하고 그를 부대로 돌려보냈다.윌리엄 스콧은 사형선고와 사면장이 모두 낭독될 때 실제로 총살대 앞에 서 있었지만 총살대에 보내지기 전에 사면받았다는 사실을 알려준 사람은 아무도 없었다.이후 스콧은 리의 밀 전투(a/k/a 댐 1호)에서 전사했다.

9월 3일 부대원들은 체인 다리를 건너 교량 1마일(1.6km) 전방인 '캠프 어드밴스'를 점령했다.9월 9일, 스콧 일병은 처형될 예정이었으나, 사형선고가 낭독된 후, 사면이 낭독되어 그의 목숨을 살려주었다.1997년, 군법회의와 사면서류 원본이 발견되고, 인증되어 링컨 대통령이 사면에 직접 서명했는지를 둘러싼 논란이 종식되었고, 결국 그는 그렇게 했다.[4][5]스콧은 치명상을 입은 리의 밀에서 전투까지 자신의 연대에 충실하게 근무했고, 요크타운의 국립묘지에 안장되었다.

9월 11일, 이 연대는 버지니아주 르윈스빌을 오가며 정찰에 참여했고, 그곳에서 남부 연합군의 교전자들과 교전했다.진영으로 돌아온 연대는 로서의 전지에서 공격을 받았다.아모스 메저브 일병이 사망하고 윌리엄 H. 콜번 일병이 치명상을 입었으며, 5명이 부상을 입었다.9월 25일 이 연대는 르윈스빌로 다시 정찰에 참여했지만 인명피해는 없었다.레드필드 프록터는 버몬트 제5보병의 소령 임명을 수락하기 위해 이 날짜에 연대에서 사임했다.[6]

이후 2주 동안 버몬트 4연대와 5연대는 스미스의 사단에 합류했다.10월 9일 버몬트 연대는 체인 브리지에서 약 4마일 떨어진 캠프 그리핀으로 이동했다.이곳에서 10월 24일, 제6대 버몬트 보병대가 도착하여 "올드 버몬트 여단"의 초기 조직을 완성하였다.

이때부터 연대의 역사는 본질적으로 버몬트 여단의 역사다.[7]

재입대하지 않은 연대의 원래 대원들은 1864년 7월 27일 퇴역했다.퇴역군인과 신병은 1864년 7월 25일 6개 회사로 통합되었다.1865년 10월 1일 이전에 임기가 만료될 예정이었던 1년의 신병 및 그 밖의 사람들은 1865년 6월 19일에 퇴사되었다.나머지 장교들과 남자들은 7월 11일에 퇴역했다.
