초기 기독교 교회에서는 '이단'과 '시즘'의 개념의 구별 형성이 시작되었다. 교회적 용법에서 이단(hereshy)이란 신앙이나 도덕의 근본적인 문제에 대한 이견에 근거한 심각한 대립을 말하는 반면, '슈시즘(schism)'이라는 용어는 대개 조직적 또는 덜 중요한 이념적 차이에 의해 야기되는 작은 형태의 불화를 의미한다.[1] 이단은 교회가 필수적이라고 간주했던 교리를 거부하는 것이다. 슈미즘은 교회의 권위자와의 교감을 거부하는 것으로서, 2004년 콘스탄티노폴리스의 바르톨로뮤 1세와 아테네의 크리스토둘로스 대주교 사이에 존재했던 서구의 슈미즘과 같은 사례에서 분명히 알 수 있듯이, 성찬의 모든 교리가 반드시 교리에 관한 것은 아니다.[2] 그러나 어떤 이유로든 사람들이 성찬에서 탈퇴할 때, 두 개의 뚜렷한 교회적 실체가 발생할 수 있으며, 각각 또는 적어도 그 구성원의 일부가 다른 이단체를 고발할 수 있다.

기독교에서의 분열의 정의

기독교 신학에서 교회의 통합의 개념은 사도, 성부, 사과론자들에 의해 발전되었다. 교회통합의 교리에 가장 큰 공헌은 사도 베드로와 바울, 안티오크의 이그나티우스, 리온스의 이레나에우스, 카르타고의 사이프리아누스, 바질 대왕, 신학자 그레고리우스, 존 크리소스톰, 다마스쿠스의 요한에 의해 이루어졌다. 기독교 교회학은 존 크리소톰이 다음과 같이 썼듯이 통합과 교회는 동의어라는 진술을 주장한다. "교회의 이름은 분리가 아니라 화합과 화합의 것이다."[3][4] 교회의 가장 위대한 신학자 및 아버지 중 한 명인 바질 대제에 따르면, 분열은 기성 교회 전통의 특정 측면을 이해하는 데 있어서 의견 불일치로 인한 단결로 인한 단절이며, 이는 표준적인 실천에 반영된다. 안티오키아의 이그나티우스는 특히 기독교인들에게 분열에 기여할 수 있는 죄악에 대해 경고했다.
