미국에서는 5월 1일에 충성의 날을 기념한다. 이 날은 "미국에 대한 충성심을 재확인하고 미국 자유의 유산을 인정하기 위해" 제쳐진 날이다. 날짜인 5월 1일은 국제 노동자의 날에 대응하기 위해 정해졌고, 제2차 적색 공포의 절정에서 잉태되었다.
역사
이 휴일은 제1차 적색 공포 기간인 1921년에 처음 관측되었다.[2] 원래는 '미국화의 날'로 불렸으며,[3][4] 1886년 시카고 헤이마켓 사건을 기념하는 국제노동자의 날(5월 1일) 기념일을 대체하기 위한 것이었다.[5]
제2차 적색공포 때는 1955년 4월 27일 미 의회에서 인정받아 1958년 7월 18일(공법 85-529)에 공식 재발명휴일을 만들었다.[6][1][7] 드와이트 D 대통령 아이젠하워는 1955년 5월 1일을 충성의 날로 선포했다.[8] 1958년 아이젠하워는 의회가 충성의 날과 충돌을 피하기 위해 10월 첫째 월요일로 어린이 건강의 날을 옮겨야 한다고 촉구했다.[7][9] 충성의 날은 1958년 법정 공휴일로 시작된 이래 모든 대통령이 매년 공식 선언으로 인정받아 왔다.[10][11]

법적 정의
로열티 데이는 미국 § 115에서 다음과 같이 정의된다.
- (a) 지정.— 5월 1일은 충성의 날이다.
- (b) 목적.— 충성의 날은 미국에 대한 충성심을 재확인하고 미국 자유의 유산을 인정하기 위한 특별한 날이다.
- (c) 선언.— 대통령은 포고문을 발표해야 한다.
- (1) 충성의 날에 미국 정부 관리들에게 미국의 국기를 모든 정부 건물에 표시하도록 요청해야 한다.
- (2) 학교 및 기타 적절한 장소에서 적절한 의례와 함께 충성의 날을 준수하도록 미국 국민을 초대한다.
