Greatest Hits는 엘튼 존의 11번째 공식 앨범 발매와 첫 번째 컴파일이다. 1974년 11월에 발매된 이 곡은 1970년부터 1974년까지 존의 싱글 중 10곡을 편찬하며 북미와 유럽 및 오스트레일리아에서 발매된 곡에 한 곡의 편차가 있다. 이 앨범은 미국과 영국에서 앨범 차트에서 1위를 차지했으며, 전 세계에서 10주 연속 1위에 머물렀으며, 후자는 11주 연속 1위에 머물렀다.

내용물

미국과 캐나다 모두 차트 1위를 차지했지만 당시 영국에서 싱글로 발매되지 않았던 싱글 '베니와 제트스'가 앨범의 미국판과 캐나다판에 등장했다. 영국과 호주판은 '캔들 인 더 윈드(Candle in the Wind)'로 대체돼 두 나라 모두 히트했지만 미국과 캐나다에서는 싱글로 발매된 적이 없다. 1992년 재발행된 곡에는 11곡이 수록되어 있으며, 두 곡 모두 수록되어 있다.

미국과 캐나다 외 엘튼 존의 앨범 수록곡 '보더 송'은 1970년 싱글로 미국 빌보드 핫 100에서 92위, 캐나다 RPM 전국 싱글 차트 34위에 올랐다.[5] 다른 모든 곡들은 영국과 미국에서 탑 40을 만들었고, 가장 탑 10을 차지했으며, "Bennie and the Jets"와 "Crocodile Rock"이 미국에서 차트 1위를 차지했다. 존은 키키 디와의 듀엣곡 "Don't Go Breaking My Heart"를 통해 1976년까지 영국에서 싱글 차트 1위를 차지하기 위해 기다리곤 했다.

총 10곡만 수록된 이 컬렉션에는 해당 시기의 히트 싱글 몇 곡이 포함되지 않는다. 이번 에디션은 메인 앨범의 미국 LP 트랙 리스트에 이어 '캔들 인 더 윈드(Candle In The Wind)'를 11번 트랙으로 추가했다.

1996년 일본판

닛폰폴리그램/머큐리뮤직엔터테인먼트(부제: Your Song)가 발매한 확장판은 '베니와 제트스'를 빼고 5곡의 추가 트랙을 추가하는 등 러닝 순서가 다르다.[11] 2000년 유니버설 뮤직 재팬은 굿바이 옐로우 브릭 로드라는 대체 제목으로 앨범을 재발매했다. 트랙 목록은 다음과 같다.
