Italygate

이탈리아 게이트는 2020년 미국 대통령선거가 위성과 군사기술을 이용해 조 바이든에게 유리하도록 조작돼 도널드 트럼프에서 바이든으로 표를 원격으로 전환했다고 주장하는 친(親)트럼프, QAnon[1][2] 계열의 음모론이다.[1]이 음모에는 바티칸이 연루됐다는 소문도 돌았다.[2]이런 주장을 조사한 로이터통신과 USA투데이의 팩트체커들은 "거짓말"이며 "근거가 없다"[1][3]고 표현했다.

이론의 세부사항 및 전파

조지아에 본사를 둔 로비스트이자 501(c)4 기구인 '네이션스 인 액션(nations in action)'의 리더인 마리아 모일로 잭은 2020년 12월 24일 자신의 마러라고 리조트에서 트럼프에게 음모론에 대해 말했다고 전했다.[4]12월 29일, 마크 메도우스는 제프리 로젠 법무장관 대행에게 이탈리아게이트 주장을 설명하는 편지를 보냈다.[4]이 편지는 공화당 여성 기업인 미셸 루즈벨트 에드워즈가 이끄는 USA항공파트너스의 레터헤드에 인쇄됐다.[4]

2021년 1월 6일 에드워즈 회장이 이끄는 좋은 거버넌스 연구소는 네이션스 인 액션(Nations in Action[5])과의 공동 성명서를 발표하면서 아르투로 딜리아라는 이름의 이탈리아 해커가 미국의 선거 결과를 바꾸기 위해 "이탈리아 페스카라에 위치한 레오나르도 컴퓨터 시스템과 군사위성을 이용했다"고 자백했다.[4]이탈리아 교도소는 이후 두 명의 미국인이 어떻게 딜리아를 심문하려고 했던 살레르노 교도소에 접근할 수 있었는지 조사하고 있다고 밝혔다.[6]딜리아는 기자들에게 자신은 미국인들과의 대화를 거부해왔으며, 음모 혐의와는 아무런 관련이 없다며 "나는 아무것도 훔치지 않았다.나는 아무에게도 아무 것도 건네주지 않았다.악성코드를 만들었을 뿐이야."[7]

잭에 따르면 이번 작전은 레오나르도의 이사회 멤버였던 이탈리아 장군 클라우디오 그라지아노의 도움을 받아 로마 주재 미국 대사관에 의해 조율된 것이었다.[4][1][8]또한 1월 6일, 미국 미디어 매터스 지는 이 이론을 지지하는 사람들이 트위터에서 "#ItalyDidIt"을 유행시키려 한다고 보도했다.관련 게시물은 QANN 발기인 론 왓킨스와 이 운동에 소속된 다른 음모 이론가들에 의해 리트윗되었다.[9]

뉴욕타임스에 따르면 트럼프 대통령의 임기 마지막 주 동안 마크 메도우스 비서실장은 법무부를 설득해 이런 주장을 조사하려 했다고 한다.메도우스는 로젠에게 그 주장에 대한 유튜브 동영상의 링크를 이메일로 보냈고, 로젠은 그의 부관 리차드 도노휴에게 이메일을 보냈고, 그는 그 이메일을 "순수한 정신이상"[11][12][13][14][15]이라고 대답했다.워싱턴포스트는 "이탈리아게이트는 트럼프 대통령의 측근들이 밀어붙인 "가장 미친 선거 사기 음모"라고 평했는데, 이는 "도널드 트럼프 대통령과 그의 팀이 그의 선거 패배에 진정으로 의심을 품을 수 있는 어떤 것(무엇이든)을 움켜쥐고 얼마나 필사적인지를 보여준다"[16]고 평가했다.
