첸나이는 도시 주변에 주요 자동차 제조 유닛과 연합 산업이 있어 '인도의 디트로이트'라는 별명을 갖고 있다. 첸나이는 처음에는 '아시아의 디트로이트'[1]라는 별명을 얻었지만, 그 직후 태국은 '아시아의 디트로이트'[2]가 되었다.

첸나이의 4륜차는 인도 자동차[3] 산업의 30%, 자동차 부품 산업의 35%의 저변이다.[4][5] 상업 산업 외에도 군사 관련 차량을 생산하기 위해 아바디에 중형차 공장(HVF)이 설립되었다. 아바디는 또한 새로운 엔진 시험 시설인 전투 차량 연구 개발 설립(CVDE)을 자랑한다.
