힌두교 달력은 태양력이지만 대부분의 축제 날짜는 달력의 음력 부분을 사용하여 지정됩니다.음력은 세 가지 달력 요소로 구분됩니다: 마사(음력월), 파카(음력 2주), 티티(음력일).

또한 마사(masa)를 지정할 때는 두 가지 전통 중 하나인 viz. amannta / purimimanta가 적용된다.만약 축제가 달의 쇠퇴기에 있다면, 이 두 전통은 같은 음력 날을 두 개의 다른 (그러나 연속적인) 마사로 구분한다.
