이 유전자는 핵단백질을 JmjC 도메인으로 암호화한다.JmjC 도메인 함유 단백질은 α-케토글루타르산 의존성 히드록실화효소 슈퍼패밀리에 속한다.그것들은 단백질 히드록실화효소 또는 히스톤 데메틸라아제 역할을 할 것으로 예측된다.이 단백질은 아포토시스 세포의 식세포증에 관여하는 추정 포스파티딜세린 수용체로 처음 확인되었다.후속 연구는 단백질이 포스파티딜세린 수용체를 인식하고 아포토시스 세포의 클리어런스에서 직접적으로 기능하지 않는 모노클로널 항체와 교차 반응할 수 있음을 시사한다.이 [6]유전자에 대해 서로 다른 아이소폼을 코드하는 여러 개의 전사 변형이 발견되었다.생리학적 차원에서 JMJD6는 혈관형성 과정인 혈관신생에서 역할을 하는 반면, 병태생리학적 과정에서의 JMJD6의 추가적인 역할(유방종양유전 등)[7]이 관련되었다.여기에서 [8]JMJD6 수치가 높아진 것은 생쥐의 공격성 및 전이와 관련된 유방암에서 발견되었다.
