오하이오 교통부(ODOT)는 주간 고속도로, 미국 고속도로, 주(州) 노선이 포함된 주(州)[1] 고속도로망의 구축과 분류를 담당한다. 다른 주와 마찬가지로 오하이오 주에서도 미국과 주간 고속도로가 주 노선으로 분류된다. 오하이오 주에는 기존의 미국 고속도로나 주간 고속도로를 복제하는 주 노선이 없다.
오하이오는 ODOT 시스템의 모든 경로인 "주 경로"와 ODOT가 유지하는 주 경로 시스템의 도로, 즉 외부 자치단체인 "주 고속도로"를 주간 고속도로에 대한 특별 규정을 두고 구분한다.[2][3] 주 고속도로망 외에도 주 내에는 다양한 카운티 및 읍면 도로망이 있다.

오하이오 카운티 간 고속도로는 맥과이어 법안(상원법안 165, 제79회 오하이오 총회)의 통과로 1911년 6월 9일에 만들어졌다.[4] 시스템 중 가장 중요한 메인 마켓 로드는 1913년 4월 15일에 정의되었다.[5]
1923년에 번호 매기기 시스템이 단순화되었다. 그것은 미국 번호 고속도로 시스템의 숫자를 수용하기 위해 1927년에 더 변경되었다.
1935년 오하이오 총회는 주 고속도로 시스템에 12개월 동안 5,000마일의 도로를 추가하는 법을 통과시켰다.[6][7] 이들 도로에는 500년대, 600년대, 700년대에 노선번호가 부여되었다.[8]
1962년에는 주간 고속도로 시스템의 숫자를 수용하기 위해 특정 숫자가 은퇴되었다.
