역사

2012~2019년: 창립 및 초기

2020-2021: 원격 우선 모델 및 IPO

2020년 5월 COVID-19 대유행 당시 회사는 완전히 원격근무로 전환하고 있으며 더 이상 정식 본부를 인정하지 않겠다고 발표했다.[53]또 5월에는 7500만~1억 달러의 가격에 뉴욕에 본사를 둔 디지털 자산 거래 회사 타고미를 인수했다고 발표했다.[2]코인베이스는 지난 6월 브라이언 암스트롱 최고경영자(CEO)[54]가 회사의 비정치적 문화를 이유로 블랙라이프 매체에 대한 진술을 거부해 내부 반발을 샀으나 이후 암스트롱이 트위터를 통해 입장을 번복했다.암스트롱은 지난 9월 코인베이스가 구글, 페이스북 등 다른 기술기업에 피해를 줬다는 점을 들어 사회운동에 나서지 않을 것임을 강조하는 블로그 글을 게재하고 이 같은 방향에 동의하지 않는 사람들을 위해 퇴직금을 내걸었다.[54][55]이 회사는 또 인종이나 성별 때문에 부당한 대우를 받았다며 직원들의 불만도 받았다.[56]지난 10월 코인베이스는 비자 직불카드 프로그램 시작을 알렸다.[57]뉴욕타임스(NYT)는 12월 2018년(출판일 기준)까지의 자료를 토대로 코인베이스의 여성들에게 회사 내에서 비교할 수 있는 직종과 직급에서 남성보다 평균 8% 적은 급여를 지급했으며, 흑인 직원들은 비슷한 직급의 여성보다 7% 적은 급여를 받았다고 보도했다.[58][59]

2021년 3월엔 블록체인 기술의 특성상 특정 이용자의 거래를 막기 위해 '기술적으로 실행불능'이 된다는 점에 주목해 블랙리스트에 오른 개인이나 기업에 블록체인 서비스를 제공한 것 아니냐는 우려와 함께 해외자산관리청의 검토를 받았다.[60][61]

2021년 3월 거래량에 대해 오도된 정보를 보고했다는 규제 청구를 해결하기 위해 650만 달러를 지급하기로 합의했다.[62][63]또한 지난 3월 코인베이스는 인도에서 사업장을 설립하고 엔지니어링, 소프트웨어 개발, 고객 지원 운영 등 IT 서비스에 직원을 채용하고 있다고 발표했다.또 하이데라바드에 물리적 사무소를 개설할 계획도 밝혔다.[64][65]

2021년 4월, 4월 14일 직접 상장을 앞두고 최종 실적 발표와 함께 동사는 1분기 매출이 190.6달러에서 1.8B달러로 9배 증가했다고 발표했다.전년도 M.이 같은 급등은 당시 비트코인 가격이 상승했기 때문으로 풀이된다.[66]

2022년 슈퍼볼 광고

슈퍼볼 LVI 기간 중 코인베이스의 60초 광고는 입소문을 탔으며 많은 사람들이 게임 중 가장 효과적인 광고라고 여겼다.[78]액센츄어 인터렉티브가 인정한 이 광고는 초당 21만7000달러(약 1300만 달러)[79]의 비용이 들며 QR코드를 바꾸는 튕기는 색상의 스크린세이버 같은 화면만 선보였다.이 코드는 사용자들에게 무료 비트코인 15달러를 광고하는 웹페이지와 신규 계좌에 대한 300만 달러의 상금을 받기 위한 경품 프로모션에 참여하도록 안내했다.낮은 테크놀로지 이미지는 스크린에서 튕겨나온 오래된 DVD 스크린세이버 로고의 복고적인 모습을 자아냈다.[80]

그 광고는 내레이션이 없고 음악만 있었다.사용자 유입으로 코인베이스의 홈페이지가 다운됐다.코인베이스의 랜딩 페이지는 1분 만에 2000만 히트를 기록했다.iOS 앱은 광고 후 전체 다운로드에서 186위에서 2위로 뛰어올랐다.[81][82][83]이 광고는 밤 늦게 메타(게임 후 스트리밍 푸 파이터즈 콘서트를 광고하기 위해 소셜미디어에 자체 유사 광고를 게재한 것)에 의해 패러디됐다.메타는 "이것이 깨지지 않기를 바란다"[82][83]고 말했다.'크립토 볼'이라는 별명이 붙은 슈퍼볼은 미국 방송에서도 Crypto.com, eToro, FTX의 광고가 방영됐다.[81]

크리스텐 카발로 마틴 에이전시 최고경영자(CEO)는 브라이언 암스트롱 코인베이스 최고경영자(CEO)가 광고 제작 과정에서 기획사들이 맡았던 역할을 인정하지 않는다고 비판했다.[84]

2022년 러시아의 우크라이나 침공

코인베이스는 2022년 러시아의 우크라이나 침공에 대응해 러시아 관련 암호화폐 지갑주소 2만5000여개를 불법행위한 것으로 보고 차단했다.[85]

운영

코인베이스는 원격제일기업으로 운영되며, 물리적인 본사가 없다.[53]SEC 공개 신청의 일환으로 동사는 100개국 이상에서 4,300만 명의 검증된 사용자, 7,000개의 기관, 115,000개의 에코시스템 파트너를 신고했다.또 2020년 순이익은 11억4000만달러로 전년도의 4억8300만달러보다 증가했다고 발표했다.2019년 적자를 낸 뒤 그해 3억2200만달러의 순이익도 신고했다.[93]암호시장 자산 7820억 달러 중 900억 달러 가량이 코인베이스 플랫폼에 잡혀 있다.[93]

2018년 현재 32개국에서 매수/매도 거래 기능을 제공했고,[94] 암호화폐 지갑은 전 세계 190개국에서 구입할 수 있었다.[95]

코인베이스 효과

'코인베이스 효과'는 코인베이스 등 지배적인 암호화 거래소에 매물로 상장된 암호화폐가 뉴스가 공개된 후 며칠 만에 가격이 오르는 것을 말한다.[96]바론스에 따르면 어떤 암호화폐가 광범위하게 수용되는가에 거래소에 상장되는 효과가 큰 것으로 나타났다.[97]

불평들

2018년 2월 16일 코인베이스는 일부 고객이 암호화폐의 신용 및 차변 구매에 대해 오류로 과다 청구된 사실을 인정했다.문제는 이달 초 은행과 카드사들이 암호화폐 구매를 위한 가맹점 카테고리 코드(MCC)를 변경하면서 시작됐다.이는 이제 암호화폐 결제가 '현금진전'으로 처리된다는 뜻으로, 은행과 신용카드 발행사가 고객에게 암호화폐 구매에 대한 현금성 수수료를 부과하기 시작할 수 있다는 의미다.2018년 1월 22일부터 2월 11일까지 거래소에서 암호화폐를 구매한 고객이라면 누구나 영향을 받을 수 있었다.처음에 비자는 2월 16일 파이낸셜타임스에 "중복거래 카드 보유자들이 보도하는 것을 야기할 어떤 시스템도 변경하지 않았다"고 말하면서 코인베이스의 탓을 했다.그러나 최근 코인베이스 블로그에 올라온 비자와 월드페이의 성명은 "이 문제는 코인베이스에 의한 것이 아니다."[98]
