방송
(릭 가슨, 폴 플래티 & 짐 유키치가 만든) 설립 이후, BMAs는 폭스 네트워크에서 방송되었습니다. 그러나 계약 만료 및 기타 예상치 못한 상황으로 인해 2007년에 시상이 취소되었습니다. 2008년 (AEG Live와 연계하여) 새로운 버전의 시상식에 대한 계획은 무산되었고, 2011년까지 BMA가 개최되지 않았습니다.
2011년 2월 17일, 빌보드는 2011년 5월 22일 폭스의 원래 집에서 새로운 네트워크인 ABC로 이동하면서 BMAs를 텔레비전으로 다시 가져올 것이라고 발표했습니다.[61] 새로운 상은 뉴욕 회사인 소사이어티 어워드에 의해 만들어졌습니다. 빌보드와 공동 소유하고 있는 딕 클라크 프로덕션은 2014년부터 이 시상식을 제작하기 시작했습니다.[62] 2017년 11월 28일, 빌보드 뮤직 어워드가 2018년부터 다년간의 계약에 따라 ABC에서 NBC로 옮겨갈 것이라고 발표했습니다.[63]
당초 4월 29일로 예정되어 있던 2020년 기념식은 코로나바이러스 관련 대중집회 우려로 인해 3월 17일 무기한 연기되었습니다.[64] 2020년 8월 14일, 2020년 시상식은 10월 14일로 변경되었다고 발표되었습니다.
