웨스트제트 앙코르(WestJet Encore)는 알버타 캘거리(Albertta)에 본사를 두고 있는 캐나다 지역 항공사로서, 같은 모회사인 웨스트제트항공이 소유하고 있다.Jet Airlines, Ltd.)이 소유하고 있다.웨스트제트항공이 보잉 737기만 운항하는 등 향후 성장 한계에 대한 내부 시장 연구에 대응해 2013년 웨스트제트엔코어를 결성해 소형 항공기를 이용해 운항 빈도를 높이는 것은 물론, 교통량이 적은 노선으로 서비스를 확대했다.

웨스트제트는 2012년 5월 1일 의향서를 통해 봄바디어 Q400 넥스트젠 항공기 20대를 초기 주문했고, 그 결과 2012년 6월 28일 조건부 주문이 이뤄졌다.2012년 8월 1일 20 Q400 넥스트젠과 25개 옵션의 확정 주문이 발표되었다.[8][9]ATR-72-600은 초기 취득가격이 낮고 단거리 비행에서는 연비가 좋으나 속도가 느리고, 장시간 비행에서는 연비가 나쁘고 승객용량이 약간 적다는 [10]점을 고려했다.[11][12]

항공 서비스 도입 및 운영 조건

모기업인 웨스트제트항공은 웨스트제트와 법적으로 별개의 항공사인 웨스트제트엔코어를 설립했다.[13][14][15]앙코르 명칭 선정에 앞서 치누크, 에코, 리치 등 다른 명칭을 고려했다.[16]캘거리는 웨스트제트 앙코르 기업 본사에 선정됐지만 토론토 피어슨 국제공항도 고려됐다.[17]웨스트제트엔코어는 2013년 6월 12일 웨스트제트항공과는 별도로 항공운전자증명서를 받았다.[18][19]

2013년 6월 24일, Q400 2대를 함대에 싣고, 비행을 시작했다.[20]이날 항공사는 캘거리 국제공항과 사스카툰, 나나이모(영국 컬럼비아), 포트 세인트 사이를 비행했다. 존(영국 컬럼비아 주)은 물론 포트 사이.세인트 존과 밴쿠버.[21]IATA는 웨스트제트 앙코르에 기존에 로얄 통간 항공사가 사용하던 "WR"[22]의 항공사 코드를 할당했다.[23]

일부 웨스트제트 앙코르 항공편은 보잉 737 항공편을 지원하기에 교통량이 부족했기 때문에 웨스트제트 간선 항공사가 운행하지 않는 새로운 노선이었다.다른 웨스트제트 앙코르 항공편은 기존 웨스트제트 노선의 주파수를 늘렸다.[5]웨스트제트엔코어의 서비스는 당초 서부 캐나다로 한정됐으나 2014년 6월 토론토에서 온타리오주 썬더베이까지 노선을 갖고 동부지역에서 서비스를 개시했다.[24]이후 토론토와 핼리팩스를 중심으로 동부 노선에 취항하기 시작했다.[24]웨스트제트 앙코르는 2016년 국제시장에 진출해 보스턴 로건 공항을 운항했고,[25][26] 이듬해 내슈빌 국제공항이 추가됐다.[27]

WestJet Encore는 지역 항공편에서 Q400 NextGen을 최대 700해리까지 운항한다.[28]웨스트제트 앙코르 승객의 50%가 웨스트제트와 연결 항공편을 이용하고 있다.[24][29]Q400s의 웨스트제트엔코어 기단은 2015년 3월까지 18대로, 이후 2016년 12월까지 34대로, 2017년 12월까지 43대로 확대됐다.[5][30]2015년 웨스트제트엔코어는 Q400 항공기 중 가장 빠르게 성장하는 운영사였다.[21]2017년까지 Q400 항공기를 세계에서 네 번째로 많이 운항했다.[31]

2015년 8월 웨스트제트엔코어는 수정된 리버리지를 채택했다.'웨스트젯'이라는 단어와 함께 사용된 꼬리와 타입 스타일은 그대로였지만 웨스트젯 타이틀을 앞두고 있던 티앤블루 기하학적 위젯은 비슷한 무늬의 티앤블루 스타일 단풍잎으로 대체됐다.[32][33]

웨스트젯 앙코르에는 부분적으로 노동조합이 있는 노동력이 있다.처음에는 완전히 비노조 직원이었던 이 항공사는 2014년부터 노조 추진의 표적이 되었다.[34]2016년 1월 1일부터, 항공사 경영진은 웨스트제트 사전 관리 팀의 일원인 웨스트제트 파일럿 협회를 발족하여 웨스트제트 엔코어와의 파일럿 계약을 비준하였다.[35]미국 항공사인 [36]항공 조종사 협회는 2017년 11월 500명의 조종사 노동력을 통합하는 데 성공했다.[37]시범 기지는 캘거리와 토론토에 위치해 있다.웨스트제트 조종사는 캐나다 시민이나 캐나다 영주권자가 되어야 한다.[38]항공업계의 조종사 부족이 웨스트제트엔코어에 영향을 미치면서 신규 채용된 조종사들은 채용 전 1000시간의 비행 경험만 있으면 된다는 요건이 생겼다.[39]경쟁 항공사인 Jazz와는 달리 웨스트제트에서 대형 제트기를 조종하는 조종사들은 결국 더 높은 급여를 받는 위치가 보장된다. Jazz는 Air Canada에서 최종 일자리를 보장하지 않는다.[15]웨스트제트 앙코르와 승무원들은 2018년 1월 1일부터 1년간 보상과 근무 규정에 관한 합의를 보았다.그러나 합의 당사자가 아닌 캐나다공무원노동조합(CUPE)은 승무원 계급 통합 노력을 지속하겠다고 밝혔다.[40]

2016년 10월 31일, 웨스트제트 엔코어 및 그 계열사인 웨스트제트의 최대 거점인 캘거리 국제공항에서 20억 달러, 200만 평방피트의 미국 크로스 국경 및 국제선 국제선 터미널이 문을 열었다.[41][42]항공사와의 협의에도 불구하고 터미널 설계는 문제가 있는 것으로 판명되었다.[43]캘거리 공항청의 CEO는 이 새로운 터미널이 "미학에만 급급하고 기능성은 부족하다"[44]고 특징지었다.국내와 미국 국경이나 국제선[29] 양쪽에 항공기를 사용할 경우 다른 중앙홀로 견인해야 할 필요성과 함께 도보 거리가 길어 한 곳 이상의 중앙홀에 배치할 수 없어 추가 직원을 채용해야 할 필요성 때문에 항공기 효율성이 떨어진다.[45]신 터미널의 수하물 시스템은 2016년부터 2019년까지 나머지 공항과 함께 운전불가능하다.[41]승객 문제에는 웨스트제트 횡단 및 국제 관문이 국내 웨스트제트 관문까지 최대 2킬로미터를 걸어갈 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 승객들이 바닥에 앉을 수 있는 충분한 좌석이 없다는 것이 포함된다.[41][44][45]이러한 문제들은 승객들의 교통에 위협으로 보여지는데, 이것은 웨스트제트 엔코어가 운항하는 항공편이 적거나 아예 없는 시애틀이나 밴쿠버와 같은 다른 연결 공항으로 몰릴 수 있다.[29]

웨스트제트엔코어는 웨스트제트항공(주)의 전 소유 회사다.웨스트제트엔코어 항공편의 판매와 마케팅은 웨스트제트항공(주)이 소유한 2개 법인이 공동 소유하고 있는 '웨스트제트 앤 앨버타 파트너십'이 진행한다.[46]

마케팅

캐빈 및 서비스

이코노미 클래스 좌석뿐만 아니라 웨스트제트 앙코르 항공기에는 지정된 프리미엄 섹션이 있다.메인라인 캐리어인 웨스트제트의 프리미엄 섹션과 달리 레그룸을 늘리지 않았다.웨스트제트 앵콜의 프리미엄 섹션은 객실 앞쪽에 좌석이 있으며 항공권 변경 시 변경 수수료가 없다.[72]웨스트제트 앙코르 항공편의 대부분은 제트 브리지를 사용하지 않고 대신 지상으로 적재되는데, 이는 승객이 항공기에 올라타기 전에 터미널을 앞치마 위로 빠져나간다는 것을 의미한다.웨스트제트엔코어 항공기에는 낙하산 산소마스크가 없어 고도 2만5000피트까지 운항할 수 있는 항공기의 인증으로 규정상 필요하지 않다.[73]
