분류법

표범고양이 개체군의 분자분석을 보면 쓰시마, 한국, 시베리아, 중국, 대만과 동남아시아 개체군의 차이가 뚜렷하다.이러한 유전적 차이가 특정한 구별을 나타내는 경우, P. b. 엡틸루스는 아직 유효한 [12]종일 수 있다.이리오모테 고양이(P. 벵골렌시스 이리오모텐시스)는 형태학상으로는 별개의 종으로 제시돼 왔지만 유전자 [13]분석상으로는 이리오모테 고양이의 아종으로 간주되고 있다.
계통발생학
모든 Felidae 종의 조직 샘플에서 핵 DNA의 계통학적 분석 결과, Felidae의 진화 방사선은 약 1445만 년에서 838만 년 [3][14]전 마이오세에 아시아에서 시작되었다는 것이 밝혀졌다.모든 Felidae 종의 미토콘드리아 DNA 분석에 따르면 약 1676만646만년 [15]전 방사능이 검출됐다.두 모델 모두 녹슨 반점이 있는 고양이가 유전적으로 분리된 프리오나일러스 계통의 첫 번째 고양이였다는 점에서 동의하고 [3][15]있다.431만174만 년[3] 전, 425만102만 년 [15]전 사이에 표범 고양이와 함께 갈라진 것으로 추정된다.
