녹색 이론은 국제 관계 이론이다. IR의 주류 이론과 대조적으로, 그것은 국제 관계 연구의 중심으로서 환경 문제를 제시한다. 녹색 이론에 따르면 신자유주의나 신자유주의 같은 주류 이론들은 그들의 합리주의적이고 국가 중심적인 분석 프레임워크를 통해 환경 문제를 이해하지 못한다. 녹색 이론은 세계 정의, 국제 개발, 현대화, 안보에 관한 연구에 초점을 맞추고 있다.^[1] 1970년대에 환경 관련 초국가적 이슈의 증가에 대한 대응으로서 IR에 있어서의 녹색 관점이 대두되었다. 20세기 말에 이르러 녹색 이론은 그 규율 안에서 자리를 잡게 되었다.^[2] 녹색 이론은 소위 3차(또는 4차)의 IR 논쟁에서 나온 포스트포시즘과 일치한다. 이 이론은 국제정치경제(IPE) 지향적인 날개와 국제주의적인 날개로 나눌 수 있다.^[3] 초기에는 주로 환경정권에 관심이 ^[4]있는 IPE의 날개가 ^[3]강했지만, 그 뒤 데이비드 헬드, 앤드류 링크레이터, 헨리 슈, 토마스 포게와 같은 많은 국제주의 이론가들이 환경문제와 관련된 기여를 했다.^[4]
