휘플래시 보호시스템(WHIPS)은 볼보가 1998년 도입한 자동차 휘플래시 부상으로부터 보호하기 위한 시스템이다.[1] 볼보 S80이[2] 1999년 모델 연도에 출시되었을 때 출시되었으며, 이후 모든 신형 볼보 자동차의 표준 장비에 포함되었다.[3]

세부 사항

WhIPS 장착 시트는 후방 충격 시 등받이 전체가 전방 탑승자의 목을 보호하는데 도움이 되도록 설계된다. 시스템이 전개되면 앞좌석 등받이와 머리 받침대를 뒤로 내려 운전자와 앞좌석 탑승자의 좌석 위치를 변경한다.[4] 주 에너지는 좌석 베이스의 피벗을 통해 흡수되며, 이 메커니즘은 좌석이 실제 엉덩이 관절 주위를 이동하는 동안 추가 에너지를 흡수한다. 등받이 힌지 내부의 금속 조각이 변형되어 더 많은 에너지를 흡수한다. 힌지 피스는 전개 후 교체해야 한다.[5]

볼보 교통사고연구팀에 따르면 WHIPS 장착 좌석은 교통사고로 인한 단기 부상 감소 33%, 장기 휘플래시 부상 감소 54%의 성과를 거뒀다.[6][7]

컨텍스트

유사한 앞좌석 기술은 현재 많은 아시아, 유럽, 미국 차량에서 발견된다. 도로안전보험연구소(IIHS)는 머리 받침대와 좌석 설계에 대한 등급을 매기고 2009 Euro NCAP 5 항성 안전성 시험에는 이제 시험 프로그램의 일부로 휘플래시 보호가 포함된다. 사브 자동차 AB는 1997년에 처음으로 능동형 헤드레스트를 도입했다.[8]
