보일은 달의 울퉁불퉁한 저편에서 남반구에 위치한 달 충돌 분화구다.남동쪽으로 더 큰 분화구 헤스와 인접해 있으며 분화구 알더 북북동쪽과 아브베 남남서쪽 중간 지점에 놓여 있다.

보일의 바깥 테두리는 거의 원형이며, 실내를 중심으로 약간 부들부들한 모습을 보여준다.대부분의 림은 끝이 날카롭고 이후의 충격으로 마모된 모습을 거의 보이지 않는다.그러나 남쪽 테두리는 테두리를 따라 동쪽에서 서쪽으로 항로를 따라가는 표면의 넓고 불규칙한 홈에 의해 겹겹이 덮여 있다.보일과 헤스를 잇는 좁은 지형이 겹치는 작은 분화구들도 있다.

분화구 내부는 비교적 평탄한 편으로 중간 지점에 길고 낮은 중앙 능선이 있다.이 상승은 남서쪽에서 북동쪽으로 일직선 형태로 정렬되어 있다.동쪽 테두리 근처에 작은 분화구가 있지만, 그 외에는 내부가 잘 알려지지 않았다.

관례에 따라 이러한 특징들은 달 지도에서 보일과 가장 가까운 분화구 중간 지점의 측면에 글자를 배치함으로써 확인된다.
