히스톤은 진핵생물에 있는 염색체섬유의 핵 구조를 담당하는 기본적인 핵 단백질이다.뉴클레오솜은 4개의 코어 히스톤(H2A, H2B, H3 및 H4) 각각 쌍으로 구성된 히스톤 옥타머를 감싸는 약 146bp의 DNA로 구성된다.염색질 섬유는 고차 염색질 구조를 형성하기 위해 뉴클레오솜 사이의 DNA와 링커 히스톤, H1의 상호작용을 통해 더욱 압축된다.이 유전자는 히스톤 H2A 계열의 한 구성원을 암호화한 것이다.그것은 전사를 억제하고 안정적인 X 염색체 불활성화에 참여하는 뉴클레오솜의 서브셋에서 기존의 H2A 히스톤을 대체한다.대체 스플라이싱은 여러 개의 대본 변형이 서로 다른 ISO 양식을 인코딩하는 결과를 낳는다.[7]이러한 등소형질의 표현은 간세포암과 같은 여러 암과 연관되어 있다.[8]
