1889년에 설립된 미국 방언학회(ADS)는 "북미의 영어와 다른 언어, 또는 다른 언어의 방언에 대한 연구에 전념하는" 학문이 있는 학회입니다.[4] 학회는 학술지 '아메리칸 스피치(American Speech)'를 발간합니다.

역사
이 단체는 포괄적인 미국 방언 사전을 만들기 위한 노력의 일환으로 설립되었으며, 이는 미국 지역 영어 사전의 출판으로 거의 100년에 걸친 프로젝트입니다.[4] 1889년, 조셉 라이트가 영어 방언 사전을 편집하기 시작했을 때, 미국의 문헌학자들이 미국을 위해 유사한 작품을 제작하는 궁극적인 목적으로 미국 방언 협회를 설립했습니다.

올해의 단어
1991년부터 미국 방언 협회는 하나 이상의 단어나 용어를 올해의 단어로 지정했습니다. 뉴욕 타임즈는 미국 방언 협회가 "올해의 의식"을 "아마도 시작했을 것"이라고 말했습니다.[10] 그러나, "Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache" (GfdS)는 1977년 이래로 올해의 단어를 발표했습니다.
