NEDD8 활성화 효소 E1 촉매 서브유닛은 인간에서 UBA3 유전자에 의해 인코딩되는 단백질이다.[5][6]
유비퀴틴으로 단백질을 변형시키는 것은 비정상적이거나 단명하는 단백질을 분해 대상으로 삼기 위한 중요한 세포 메커니즘이다. 유비퀴티테이션은 적어도 세 종류의 효소를 포함한다: 유비퀴틴 활성 효소, 또는 E1s, 유비퀴틴 컨쥬깅 효소, E2s, 유비퀴틴-단백질 묶음, 또는 E3. 이 유전자는 E1 유비퀴틴 활성 효소 계열의 구성원을 인코딩한다. 인코딩된 효소는 아밀로이드 베타 전구 단백질 결합 단백질인 AppBp1과 결합해 이단체를 형성한 뒤 효소 복합체가 유비퀴틴 유사 단백질인 NEDD8을 활성화해 세포분열과 신호, 발생을 조절한다. 이 유전자에 대해 구별되는 ISO형식을 인코딩하는 여러 가지 대안으로 분할된 대본 변형들이 발견되었다.[6]
이 효소는 유비퀴틴과 유사한 E2 결합 도메인을 포함하고 있으며, 유비퀴틴이 유비퀴틴 결합 도메인과 상호작용하는 것과 유사한 방식으로 E2 효소 UBE2M(Ubc12)의 촉매 코어를 모집한다.[7]
