몬스터카트(Monstercat Media, 이전 명칭은 Monstercat Media)는 브리티시 컬럼비아 주 밴쿠버에 본사를 둔 캐나다의 독립된 전자 음악 레코드 레이블이다. 2011년 마이크 달링턴과 아리 파우노넨이 설립한 레이블은 2018년까지 3주 단위로 음악을 발매했는데, 이때는 일주일에 4번 발매하는 것으로 바뀌었다. 이것은 나중에 2021년에 일주일에 6개의 출시로 변경될 것이다.

몬스터캣은 페그보드 네르드, 비세톤, 세븐 라이온즈 등 주목할 만한 아티스트들이 대거 출연했다. 몬스터캣은 포트나이트, 로켓 리그, 비트 세이버 등 다양한 비디오 게임의 사운드트랙 앨범도 발매했다.[2]

이 레이블은 2017년과 2018년 각각 미국과 캐나다에서 플래티넘 위상에 오른 미국 DJ 마쉬멜로의 2016년 음원 'Alone' 발매로 가장 잘 알려져 있다. 아일랜드 음악 프로듀서 노이즈톰의 만우절 '크랩 레이브' 발매는 발매 후 몇 달 동안 인터넷 밈이 되었다.

역사

창립(2011~2012년)

몬스터캐트 미디어는 온타리오 주 워털루 출신 대학생 2명인 마이크 달링턴(1989년생)[3][3]과 아리 파우노넨(1989/90년생)이 2011년 7월 1일 설립한 미디어다. 이들의 친구들과 음악을 알리는 매개체 역할을 했던 레이블의 유튜브 채널은 이날 만들어졌고,[4][5] 10월부터 3주간의 업로드 일정을 시작했다.[6] 이 어린 학생들은 후에 이 레이블의 획일적인 컴파일 앨범을 만드는 것에 책임이 있었다.[4]

이 팀은 달링턴과 파우노넨이 학교를 마친 후 2012년 밴쿠버에 있는 현 사무실로 옮겼다.[7]

레이블 구축, 첫 투어 및 마쉬멜로(2013~2016년)

몬스터캣은 2014년 7월 음반 판매량 100만 대를 돌파했다.[5] 레이블의 모델에 대해 묻자 달링턴은 이렇게 말했다.

2014년 8월 몬스터카트는 저작권법 개혁을 촉구하는 선언문을 발간했다. 이 책에서, 그들은 음악가들이 다른 음악가들의 음반을 샘플링하는데 있어 더 많은 자유를 주고자 하는 그들의 욕구를 묘사했다.[7][8]

몬스터캣은 2014년 12월 라이브 스트리밍 서비스 트위치의 음악 방송 시작의 일환으로 몬스터캣 FM을 출시했다.[9] 몬스터캣 FM은 24시간 연중무휴 라디오 방송국과 같은 트위치 스트림으로, 몬스터캣의 역사를 통틀어 많은 출시를 레이블로 내세우고 있다. 청계천 런칭 이벤트는 몬스터캣 아티스트 스티븐 워크링이 세팅한 DJ였다. 몬스터캣 FM은 결국 유튜브와 마이크로소프트 소유의 라이브 스트리밍 웹사이트 믹서에 추가되었다.

몬스터캣은 2015년부터 여러 음악 페스티벌에 참가하고 있다. 그런 축제 중 하나는 암스테르담 댄스 행사였다. 빌보드는 그들의 2015년 쇼에 대해 "3시간의 믹서 나들이"라고 묘사했다.[10]

2016년 5월 몬스터카트는 미국 프로듀서 마쉬멜로의 싱글 '혼자'에 사인했다. 뮤직비디오는 2019년 12월 현재 몬스터캣 유튜브 채널에서 1억6100만 뷰를 기록하는 [11]등 유튜브 전체에서 총 11억 뷰를 기록했다. 이러한 견해는 비디오가 공개된 후 그 해에 2100만 달러를 버는 데 기여했다.[11]

파트너십, 수상 및 진화(2017~2020년)

몬스터캐트는 2017년 6월 싸이오닉스와 제휴해 이전에 슬러시이, 에어로하이드, 비세톤 등 몬스터캐트에 곡을 계약한 아티스트들의 18곡 앨범인 로케트 리그 x 몬스터캐트 볼.1을 발매해 비디오게임 Rocket League 2주년 홍보에 나섰다. 이 앨범은 2017년 7월 5일에 발매되었다.[12] 몬스터카트도 같은 달 명왕성 TV TV 플랫폼을 통해 자체 텔레비전 채널인 몬스터카트 TV를 발표했다.[13][14]

몬스터캣은 2017년 7월 디제이 맥스 베스트 돌파 레이블을 수상하며 디스크우먼, 터스키지뮤직, 투스큐어디지털, 허니사운드시스템 등 다른 레이블들과 경쟁했다.[15] 몬스터캣은 2017년부터 본사 근처에서 연례 블록 파티인 '몬스터캣 컴파운드'를 열고 있다.[16]

몬스터캣은 2017년 11월 마쉬멜로의 2016년 노래 'Alone'으로 레이블의 첫 번째 인증 플래티넘 음반을 받았다. 마이크 달링턴은 빌보드에 보낸 이메일에서 이번 협업에 대한 감사의 뜻을 전하며 마쉬멜로의 성공에 대한 찬사를 전했다.[17]

몬스터캣은 2017년 12월 빌보드가 선정한 2017년 최고의 독립 댄스 레이블 5개 중 하나로 선정되기도 했다.[18]

2018년 1월 1일 주, 몬스터카트는 음악 도서관의 다양성을 이유로 "Uncaged"와 "Instinct"라는 두 가지 뚜렷한 테마로 브랜딩을 분할했다고 발표했다.[19] 이에 따라 몬스터카트(Monstercat)라는 이름의 별도 채널)가 만들어졌다. 본능 더본스 브랜드는 하우스, 퓨처 베이스 등 멜로디 측면에 주안점을 둔 음악이 특징이다. 주 4회 개봉일정을 찬성하는 3주 개봉일정을 철회하고 중간중간 팟캐스트 에피소드를 내보내는 등의 내용이 변경됐다.[20][21]

또 다른 첫 번째 음반사에서, 어거스트 9는 수메리안 레코드와의 협업 싱글을 보았다. '내 앞에 크네엘'이라 불리는 이 싱글은 브레임과 크랭크다트가 프로듀싱하고, 'Asking Alexandria'가 피처링한 곡으로 전자음악계와 록음악계 모두에서 찬사를 받았다.[22]

2018년 9월, 로켓 리그 x 몬스터카트 볼 4호가 출시되기 2주 전, 몬스터카트 게임 책임자인 개빈 존슨 씨는 라벨과 싸이오닉스의 협력에 대해 다음과 같이 말했다.

기타 파트너십

몬스터캣은 2019년 네덜란드 비디오 게임 개발사인 소에데스코와 제휴해 자사의 비디오 게임인 제논 레이서의 음악을 작곡했다.[25] 그 게임은 그해 3월 26일에 발매되었다.[26]

몬스터캣은 레이블의 8주년 기념일에 맞춰 2019년 7월 린덴랩스와 제휴를 맺고 개발자의 가상현실 게임인 산사르에 라이브 음악 경험을 접목시킬 것을 발표했다.[31] '몬스터캣: 콜 오브 더 와일드 익스피리언스'라고 불리는 이 콜라보레이션은 7월 12일에 시작되었으며, 몬스터캣의 주간 콜 오브 더 와일드 라디오 쇼에 대한 생생한 가상 현실 대안이 진행 중이다.[31]

실크뮤직 인수(2021–현재)

2021년 2월 9일 몬스터캣은 '몬스터캣 실크'[32]라는 제목의 몬스터캣 레이블 아래 제3의 브랜드를 만들기 위해 누진집 레이블 실크뮤직을 인수했다고 발표했다. 이 브랜드는 전자음악의 진보적인 면에 초점을 맞추도록 홍보되어 비슷한 장르들 중 대표적인 진보적인 스타일의 주택과 무아지경을 이어갔다. 이 거래에서 실크 뮤직의 감독 제이콥 헨리는 이 브랜드에서 감독직을 유지했다. 실크뮤직의 유튜브 채널과 소셜미디어 계정은 발표(몬스터캣이 실크의 24/7 유튜브 스트림과 실크뮤직 쇼케이스 라디오쇼를 보유함)와 함께 '몬스터캣 실크'로 리브랜딩되었고, 몬스터캣도 이번 인수를 통해 각 브랜드가 2r를 보유하면서 일주일에 6개 출시를 하게 될 것이라고 발표했다.일주일의 기일

몬스터캣과 웨스트우드 레코딩스는 2021년 9월 17일 더 펑크 헌터스, 코텍, 디펑크 등의 아티스트가 참여한 8트랙 협업 컴파일 앨범 컴파운드 2021을 발매했다. 또한 편찬이 발표된 다음날인 2020년 한 차례 공백기를 가진 뒤 몬스터캣 컴파운드 블록 파티가 열린 4년차와도 일치한다.[33][34]
