버클리 포럼
Berkeley Forum버클리 포럼(Berkeley Forum)은 단순히 포럼(Forum)이라고 일컬어지며, 버클리 캘리포니아 대학교의 저명한 비당파적 학생 단체다. 2012년에 설립된 이 포럼은 다양한 주제에 대한 토론, 패널, 저명한 강연자들과의 대화를 주최한다; 이 포럼은 옥스퍼드 연합, 캠브리지 연합, 예일 정치 연합과 같은 다른 명문 대학들의 유사한 조직을 본떠서 만든 것이다.[1][2][3]
포럼의 행사는 일반적으로 연설자들의 연설이 특징이며, 청중과의 질의응답 시간이 뒤따른다. 버클리대 학생, 교수진, 직원 등의 입장권은 항상 무료인 반면 일반인을 위한 입장권은 무료 또는 소정의 요금으로 이용 가능하다.[4]
주목할 만한 과거 사건
버클리 포럼의 첫 번째 행사는 2013년 3월에 열린 연방 재정 위기에 대한 패널 토론이었다. 이 패널에는 로버트 라이히 전 노동부 장관, 2012년 롬니 대선캠프의 정책실장, 헨리 브래디 골드만 공공정책대학원장이 참여했다.[1]
2013년 11월 포럼은 크리에이티브 커먼즈 공동창업자 겸 미국의 학술정치 활동가인 로렌스 레식(Lawrence Lessig)을 주최했다. 레시그는 "투표의 부패"라는 제목의 연설에서 정치에서 돈의 역할에 대해 논의했다.[5] 지금까지 이 포럼의 가장 크고 주목할 만한 행사는 2014년 3월 19일 켄터키 주 상원의원 랜드 폴이 한 연설이었다. 폴 상원의원은 NSA와 같은 정부 감시 프로그램의 문제에 대해 이야기했다.[6][7][8][9][10][11] 이 행사는 약 400명이 참석한 가운데 버클리 인터내셔널 하우스의 쉐브론 오디토리움에서 열렸다.[12] 로버트 라이히 전 노동부 장관과 개빈 뉴섬 캘리포니아 주지사 등이 참석한다.[13] 다음날, 이 행사는 뉴욕 타임즈 1면에 실렸다.[14][15] 2014년 3월 버클리 포럼에서도 전 미국 에너지장관과 노벨상 수상자인 스티븐 추가 주최했다. 2014년 11월 14일, 버클리 포럼은 오클랜드 시장 장 콴을 주최했다. 콴은 지방 정부와 미국 도시의 불평등에 대해 말했다.[17] 그 후, 12월 10일, 포럼은 미국의 기업가 겸 벤처 투자가인 피터 티엘을 주최했다. 그 행사는 시위자들에 의해 중단되었다.[18][19][20]
