프로토카데린-17은 인간에서 PCDH17 유전자에 의해 암호화된 단백질이다.^[5]^[6]

이 유전자는 캐더린 슈퍼 패밀리의 하위 패밀리인 프로토카데린 유전자 패밀리에 속한다.인코딩된 단백질은 6개의 세포외 캐더린 영역, 트랜스메인 영역, 그리고 기존 캐더린과는 다른 세포질 꼬리를 포함하고 있다.암호화된 단백질은 뇌의 특정 세포-세포 연결의 설정과 기능에 역할을 할 수 있다.^[6]PCDH17 프로모터 메틸레이션은 방광암 악성종양과 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 확인됨
