네프린 은 신장 여과 장벽의 적절한 기능에 필요한 단백질 이다.신장 여과 방벽은 소화성 내피세포, 활혈성 지하막, 상피세포의 편모세포 로 구성되어 있다. 네프린은 슬릿 다이어프램 의 구조적 구성 요소인 투과성 단백질이다.[5] 그것들은 복잡한 망사로서 꼬모세포의 끝에 존재하며 보우만의 공간 으로 단백질을 밀어내는 강한 음전하를 전달한다.
네프린 유전자의 결함인 NPHS1은 핀란드 유형 의 선천성 신드롬 과 관련이 있으며, 대량의 단백질이 소변, 즉 단백뇨 로 유출되게 한다. 네프린은 심혈관 발달에도 필요하다.[6]
