NGC 1404는 에리다누스자리 남쪽에 있는 타원 은하다.1837년 11월 28일 천문학자 존 허셜에 의해 발견되었다.[5]적색거성 가지 거리 표시기의 끝을 기준으로 하면 은하수로부터 약 6000만 광년 거리에 놓여 있다.[3]그것은 포르낙스 성단의 가장 밝은 구성원 중 하나이다.[6][7]

대부분의 타원형 은하의 경우 보통 그렇듯이 NGC 1404는 구상 성단이 풍부하며, 그 중 인구는 약 725명으로 추정되지만,[8] 포낙스 성단의 가장 밝은 은하인 NGC 1399와의 중력 상호작용 때문에 구상 성단의 대부분을 잃을 수 있다고 제안되었다.[9]
