피클렛은 플래시 픽션과 유사한 피클렛을 출판하고 보관하는 것을 전문으로 하는 비상업적 AOL 커뮤니티 웹사이트였다. 2007년 3월 초에서 중순까지 완전히 가동되지는 않았지만 케빈 로버에 의해 2006년 10월 31일에 설립되었다.[1][2][3] 2008년 6월 6일, 로버는 AOL로부터 그의 고용을 중단하고, 다시 피클렛의 시스템 관리자로 출발했다.[4] 로버를 대체할 새로운 관리자가 발표되지 않았고, 그 사이트에 대한 각각의 의무는 유지되지 않았다.[5]

내용

이 사이트는 64에서 1,024바이트 사이의 매우 짧은 이야기를 엄격하게 선형적으로 다루지 않는 "피클렛"을 주최했다. 피클렛은 각각 독립된 스토리가 되도록 의도되었지만 필요하지 않다는 점에서 모듈화되어 있지만, 등록한 사용자는 일단 피클렛에 무한정 많은 프리퀄이나 속편을 쓰면서 서술적 스레드를 계속할 수 있다. 모든 피클릿은 Creative Commons Attribution-Share Elikes 2.5 License에 따라 라이센스가 부여된다.[2][18][19][20]

성숙한 콘텐츠는 허황된 이야기 안에서 허용되었지만 노골적인 포르노, 외설, '혐오 발언'은 금지되었다. 성숙한 콘텐츠가 있는 피클릿 스토리는 이와 같이 지정하도록 되어 있어 성숙한 콘텐츠를 보는 것을 선택한 등록된 사용자만 스토리를 읽을 수 있도록 하였다. 팬픽션 허용과 같은 타인의 지적 재산의 이용도 피클츠에서 금지되었다. 실존 인물의 사용은 비록 그 공인을 향한 비방이나 명예훼손적인 언사는 금지되어 있었지만, 공인이 아닌 이상, 피클 스토리에서도 금지되어 있었다.[21]

2009년 1월 4일 현재, 이 사이트는 거의 4만 9천 개의 피클릿 스토리를 보유하고 있으며, 8만 개가 넘는 댓글이 달렸으며, 1만 명이 넘는 회원들을 보유하고 있다.[5][22]
