카봇 가문은 "보스턴의 첫 가족"으로도 알려진 보스턴 브라만 가문에 속했다.

역사

가족 기원

보스턴 브라만 카봇 가문은 1700년 생가에서 매사추세츠 살렘으로 이주한 존 카봇(저지 주의 b. 1680, 채널 제도의 하나)의 후손이다.[1]

카봇 가문은 저지에서 이주했는데, 여기서 성은 적어도 1274년으로 거슬러 올라갈 수 있다. 뉴저지 주의 목사님 조지 발레인은 카봇이 모두 머리처럼 보이는 작은 물고기라고 기록한다.[2]

존 캐벗의 손자들 중 한 명인 조지 캐벗

존 카봇(b. 1680년 저지 섬)[1]과 그의 아들 조셉 카봇(b. 1720년 살렘)은 아편,[4] 럼주, 노예를 운반하는 사복선단을 운영하면서 크게 성공한 상인이 되었다.[3][5] 18세기 동안 선박 운송은 보스턴의 첫 번째 가족들 대부분에서 생명선이었다. 조셉의 아들 조셉 카봇 주니어([6]살렘 1746), 조지 카봇(살렘 1752),[7] 새뮤얼 카봇(살렘 1758)은 하버드를 떠나 해운업을 거치며 가정 재산을[5] 더욱 늘렸고 엄청난 부자가 됐다.[8] 초기 미국 연방대법원 사건 중 빙함 대 카보트 사건(1795년)과 빙함 대 카보트 사건(1798년) 두 건은 가족 해운 분쟁이 있었다. 1784년 사무엘 카봇은 보스턴으로 이주했다.[8]

조지 캐벗

조지 카봇과 그의 후손들은 정치에 입문했다. 조지 카봇은 매사추세츠에서 미국 상원의원이 되었고, 임명되었지만 해군 초대 장관직을 거절했다. 그의 증손자인 헨리 카봇 로지(보스턴의 b. 1850)[9]도 1893년부터 1924년 사망할 때까지 매사추세츠주 출신의 미국 상원의원이었다. 1916년 선거에서 헨리 카봇 로지는 존 F를 물리쳤다. 피츠제럴드 전 보스턴 시장이자 존과 로버트, 에드워드 케네디의 외할아버지. 조지의 증손자 헨리 카봇 로지 주니어([10]나한트 1902년)도 1937년부터 1943년까지 매사추세츠주 상원의원, 1946년부터 1953년까지 존 F에게 패했다. 1952년 상원의원 선거의 케네디. 헨리 캐벗 로지 주니어는 아이젠하워 대통령 휘하의 유엔 주재 미국대사와 케네디 대통령 휘하의 남베트남 주재 대사를 역임했다. 그는 케네디-린든 B에 대항하여 1960년 리처드 닉슨의 부통령 후보였다. 존슨. 조지의 또 다른 위대한 손자인 존 데이비스 로지(b. 1903년 워싱턴 D.C.)[11]는 코네티컷 주의 64대 주지사였다. 조지의 증손자 조지 카봇 로지 2세(Jeorge Cabot Lodge II, 1927년, 헨리 카봇 로지의 아들)는 1962년 매사추세츠에서 열린 미국 상원의원 특별선거에서 에드워드 M. 케네디와 대적했다.

존 카봇의 손자 사무엘 카봇 주니어(보스턴의 1784년)는 배송과 결혼의 첫 가족 스테이플을 결합해 가산을 탈피했다.[12] 1812년 그는 상인왕 토머스 퍼킨스의 딸 엘리자 퍼킨스와 결혼했다.[12] 새뮤얼 카봇 3세(보스턴의 b. 1815년)[13]는 저명한 외과의사였는데, 그의 딸 릴라 카봇 페리는 유명한 인상파 화가였으며,[14] 아들 고드프리 로웰 카봇(보스턴의 b. 1861년)[15]은 미국 최대의 탄소 흑색 생산업체인 카봇 코퍼레이션(Cabot Corporation)[16]을 설립하여 잉크와 페인트에 사용했다. 사무엘의 증손자인 [17]고드프리의 아들 존 무어스 카봇(b. 1901년 케임브리지 주 케임브리지)은 아이젠하워와 케네디 행정부 시절 스웨덴, 콜롬비아, 브라질, 폴란드 주재 미국 대사였다. 또 다른 위대한 손자인 폴 코드먼 카봇[18](B. 1898년[19] 브루클린)[20]은 미국 최초의 뮤추얼 펀드와[20] "하버드의 기부" 미다스의 공동 설립자였다.[21]

카보치니크 대 카보트 사건

1923년, 해리 H. 카봇치닉과 그의 아내 머틀은 그의 성을 카봇으로 바꾸도록 청원했다.[25]

보스턴의 저명한 카봇들(보스턴 청소년 법원의 판사 카봇; Stephen Cabot 교장) 조지스 스쿨, 미들타운, R.I.; 휴 캐벗 미시간대 의대[26] 학장, 펜실베이니아 역사학회, 펜실베이니아 족보학회와 함께 이 변화를 막기 위해 반대 의견을 냈다.[27]

찰스 영 오데너드 판사는 결국 카보트니크에 대한 판결을 내렸다.[28] "법에는 그것을 막을 만한 것이 없다."[29]
