Books for the Blind

시각장애인 도서 프로그램은 미국 국립 시각장애인 도서관 서비스(NLS)의 이니셔티브로 시각장애인 또는 시각장애인에게 도서 오디오 녹음을 무료로 제공한다.[1][2] 이 프로그램에는 1934년부터 책의 오디오 녹음이 포함됐고 1996년부터 디지털 책 노력이 시작됐다.[3]

1931년 미국은 시각장애 성인들에게 책을 접할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 위해 프랫-스무트 법을 통과시켰다. 오디오 녹음을 하기 전에, 책은 점자로 제공되었다. 1931년 19개 도서관을 시작으로 2018년 3월 현재 네트워크는 55개 지역 도서관, 32개 서브 지역 도서관, 14개 자문 및 홍보 센터가 미국과 그 영토에 서비스를 제공하고 있다.[4] 1952년에는 시각장애아동을 포함하도록, 1962년에는 음악자료 포함으로, 1966년에는 표준판독을 방해하는 신체장애인을 포함하도록 프로그램을 확대하였다.[5] 시각장애인을 위한 책 프로그램은 1958년 영화 캡션법으로 이어지는 청각장애인을 위한 캡션 영화를 위한 1950년대 노력의 모델이었다.[6]

오디오 녹음은 1933년 프랫-스무트법이 '토킹 북'을 포함하도록 개정되면서 비닐에 처음 만들어졌고, 이후 1969년 [7]독점 카세트 테이프와 플레이어에 대한 녹음으로 선호되는 형식이 됐다.[8] 현재 시각장애인을 위한 도서는 NLS의 BARD(Braille and Audio Reading Download) 시스템에서 내려받을 수 있어 데스크탑 컴퓨터와 일부 모바일 기기에서 디지털 도서가 가능하다.[9] 2016년에는 NLS의 로고에 와이파이 기호가 추가되어 프로그램에 무선 연결이 포함되었음을 나타낸다.[10]
