GS/OS는 애플컴퓨터가 ProDOS 파일 시스템을 사용하는 애플 IIGS 개인용 컴퓨터를 위해 개발한 운영체제다.파일 시스템 접속, 입출력 장치 제어, 프로그램 파일 로딩 및 실행, 프로그램이 인터럽트와 신호를 처리할 수 있는 시스템 등을 제공한다.GS/OS는 Apple IIGS System Software 버전 4.0 ~ 6.0.1의 구성요소로 포함되었다. GS/OS는 이전 버전과 달리 16비트 코드로 전적으로 작성되었으며 IIGS의 진정한 16비트 운영체제로는 최초였다.

GS/OS에는 여러 개의 온디스크 파일 시스템을 응용 프로그램에 투명한 방식으로 지원할 수 있는 파일 시스템 변환기(FST)라고 알려진 기능이 포함되어 있는데, 이 기능은 ProDOS나 그 당시 대부분의 다른 마이크로컴퓨터 운영 체제에서 찾을 수 없었다.주로 ProDOS 파일 시스템(부팅이 가능한 유일한 파일 시스템)과 함께 사용되었지만, GS/OS는 또한 Mac OS에서 사용하는 계층적 파일 시스템을 포함한 다양한 다른 파일 시스템을 지원한다.ProDOS 및 HFS 외에 다른 파일 시스템 변환기에는 MS-DOS, High Sierra/ISO-9660, Apple DOS 3.3 및 Pascal용 파일 시스템 변환기가 포함되지만 읽기 전용(전체 읽기/쓰기 지원이 계획되었지만 완료되지 않음)이 포함된다.전작인 ProDOS 16 운영체제보다 GS/OS의 또 다른 장점은 IIGS의 고유한 기능을 활용하지 않는 8비트 6502 머신 코드에 주로 쓰기보다는 IIGS에서 사용되는 65816 프로세서에 대해 16비트 코드로 작성되었다는 점이다.또한 ProDOS 파일 시스템을 확장하여 Apple Macintosh에서 사용되는 것과 유사한 파일의 리소스 포크를 제공하므로 프로그램을 보다 유연하게 작성할 수 있다.

이전 버전의 ProDOS에서 큰 변화는 GS/OS가 방대한 속도 최적화(로드 시간, 디스크 액세스, 화면 업데이트)를 제공하고 Apple III Apple SOS, Macintosh System 5를 비롯한 다른 Apple 운영 체제의 많은 기능과 향후 Macintosh System Soft에 나타날 개념 및 기능을 통합한다는 점이다.제품 출시특히 파인더, 로드 가능한 글꼴, 플러그인 디바이스 드라이버(모뎀, 프린터 등) 외에도 GS/OS는 온도계 진행 표시, AppleShare 지원, 외부 파일 형식 액세스를 위한 파일 시스템 변환기, 디스크 캐싱, 리소스 포크 사용 기능 등을 제공한다.[1]APW(Apple Programmer's Workshop)라는 명령줄 개발 환경이 제공되는데, 이는 매킨토시 프로그래머 워크샵과 유사하다.[2][3][4]
