와이텐샤위·세일 이스트 보궐선거는 2014년[1] 2월 13일 전 하원의원 폴 고긴스의 사망에 이어 와이텐샤위·세일 이스트의 영국 하원의원 선거구에서 실시된 보궐선거다.[2]
이번[3] 선거는 노동당의 마이크 케인이 2010년 총선에 비해 득표율이 크게 높아져 승리했다. 이전에 저조한 성적을 보였던 UKIP가 보수당을 제치고 2위로 올라섰다. 자유민주당은 보증금을 잃었다. 투표율은 28.2%로 2010년 총선(54.3%)과 비교된다.
배경
2013년 12월 30일, 고긴스는 달리기를 하다가 쓰러져 중태에 빠졌다.[4] 그는 뇌출혈로 인한 합병증으로 2014년 1월 7일 병원에서 사망했다.[2][5]
후보 및 결과
투표 등록 신청서는 1월 28일까지 맨체스터 시의회에 접수되어야 했다.[6] 지명된 사람들의 성명은 2014년 1월 29일 오후 5시에 발표되었다.[7]
그 결과는 2월 14일 금요일 오전 2시 30분경에 발표되었다.[8]
마이크 케인 전 맨체스터 상원의원 겸 변화를 위한 운동(Movement for Change) 대표대행이 1월 24일 노동당 후보로 확정됐다.[10] 1월[12] 22일 런던 인터뷰는 '퀵파이어'[11]로 묘사된 선정 과정에서 로사 배틀과 수잔나 리브스 맨체스터 시의회 의원, 캐서린 하인스와 소피 테일러, 마이크 케인 등 5명의 지역 참의원 및 전직 카운슬러들의 짧은 명단을 작성했다.[13]
보수당 와이텐샤웨 지부는 2014년 1월 23일 트래포드 출신 대리인으로 대니얼 크릭클로우를 선출했다.[14]
자유민주당은 2014년 1월 26일 맨체스터 시의원 메리 디 마우로를 선출했다.[15]
2014년 1월 24일 영국 국민당은 에디 오설리반을 후보로 발표했다.[16] 오설리반은 살포드 지방 선거의[17] 후보였고, 2012년 맨체스터 중앙 보궐선거에서 BNP에 입후보했다. 이 선거에서는 그의 정당의 득표율이 줄어들었다.[18]
영국 독립당은 와이텐샤웨에서 자란 전 노동당 지지자[19] 존 비클리(60)를 선출했다.[20] 모바일 앱 회사를 운영하는 비클리는 가디언과의 인터뷰에서 의회가 EU에 대한 국가운영을 "외주"한 것에 대해 "책임감을 가질 필요가 있다고 생각한다"고 말했다. 비클리는 "라부르가 노동자 계층을 실망시켰다"고 느꼈으며 노동당의 행동은 그의 전 노조원 아버지가 "그의 무덤에서 썩고 있다"는 것을 의미할 것이라고 덧붙였다.[21]
녹색당은 맨체스터 대학의 추가 교육 강사인 나이젤 우드콕을 선출했다.[22]
공식 몬스터 래빙 루니 파티는 2014년 1월 25일 채플링턴-스미더 대위를 후보로 내세웠다.[23]
