반 디멘 걸프(Van Diemen Gulf)는 오스트레일리아 북부 영토에 있는 걸프다. 돈다스 해협을 통해 북쪽의 티모르 해와 연결된다. 이 지역의 대부분은 반 디멘 걸프라는 이름을 가진 지역으로도 기록되어 있다.

역사

이 만은 네덜란드의 식민지 총독인 앤서니 판 디멘 (1593–1645)의 이름을 따서 명명되었다.[3]

76톤 커터 HMS 인어공주의 필립 파커 킹과 그의 선원들은 1818년 초 해안선을 조사하여, 마카산스가 항해한 원주민들과 프로아들을 만났고, 다른 항해를 위해 걸프만을 지나갔다.[4]

지리

이 만은 던다스 해협을 통해 북쪽의 티모르 해와 연결되며, 클라렌스 해협에 의해 서쪽의 비글 만과도 연결된다. 멜빌 섬과 코부르그 반도로 부분적으로 둘러싸여 있으며, 약 140km(90mi) x 80km(50mi)이다.[5]

걸프만으로 흘러들어가는 강에는 남악어 강, 동악어 강, 메리 강, 북방영토, 애들레이드 강이 있다. 카카두 국립공원은 남동쪽 해안에 인접해 있다.[6]

관리상태

2007년 4월 4일, 반 디멘 만이 점령한 지역의 대부분은 북부 영토 정부에 의해 반 디멘 만이라는 이름을 가진 지방으로 관보에 게재되었는데, 이 지역은 서아른헴 지역의 지방 정부 지역에도 포함되었다.[7][8][9]
