함수 약 40개의 알려진 진핵종 LIM 단백질이 있는데, 이 단백질이 포함하는 LIM 도메인 의 이름을 따서 이름이 지어졌다. LIM 도메인은 아연 손가락 2개를 포함하는 보존성이 높은 사이스테인이 풍부한 구조물이다. 아연 손가락은 대개 DNA나 RNA에 결합하여 기능하지만, LIM 모티브는 단백질과 단백질의 상호작용을 매개할 것이다.
