한국의 가토 기요마사.

가토 기요마사의 북진이라고도 알려진 함경남도 캠페인은 임진왜란(1592~1598) 당시 가토 기요마사가 함경남도 동북부를 침략한 사건이었다.이 캠페인은 선화, 임해 왕자에게도 일본인들에게 넘겨준 조선인 탈북자들의 도움 덕분이 컸다.왜인들은 함경도 동북쪽 가장자리에 이르러 두만강을 건너 오랑캐 주르첸을 공격했으나 거센 저항을 만났다.가토는 남쪽으로 돌아와 안변으로 거처를 옮겼고, 나베시마 나오시게는 길주에 본사를 두었다.겨울까지 현지 저항 세력 다시 일본 직업에 밀지 말고 길주를 포위했다 시작했다.[3]

캠페인

가토 기요마사와 나베시마 나오시게가 개성을 함락한 데 이어 2만 명의 병력을 이끌고 함경도를 침공했다.[1]

남군사령관과 함경도 지방지사 모두 아무런 저항도 없이 도망쳤다.[2]

일본인들은 길주 근처의 창고인 해중창에서 그들의 첫 번째 진짜 저항을 만났다.한국함 북군사령관은 왜군들에 대한 공격을 주도하여 창고에 피난하도록 강요했다.그 후 그는 그들의 진지를 향해 전진했지만 집중 포화에 직면하여 요새화된 창고를 점령할 수 없었다.그들은 가까운 산굴로 후퇴했는데, 그곳에서 그날 밤 일본인에게 매복 공격을 당하게 될 것이었다.일제는 그들에게 총을 쏘고 일단 당황하면 안으로 들어가 그들을 베어 버렸다.한국남은 겨우 탈출에 성공했으나 그를 일본인들에게 넘겨준 조선인 탈북자들에게 붙잡혔다.[2]

가토는 더 북쪽으로 진군하여 임해왕자와 순화왕자 두 사람을 넘겨준 조선인 탈북자들의 영접을 받았다.이어 가토는 8천 명의 병력과 3천 명의 조선인 탈북자를 거느리고 두만강을 건너 오랑캐 주르헨의 영토로 들어갔다.그는 비교적 무방비 상태의 요새를 점령했다.다음날 거의 1만 명의 쥬르첸인들이 일본인들을 공격했으나 폭우가 그들 방향으로 불기 시작하자 철수했다.가토는 재빨리 두만강을 건너 남쪽으로 다시 안변으로 후퇴해 그곳에서 도요토미 히데요시에게 답장을 썼다.[2]
