칠천량 해전은 1597년 8월 28일 밤에 일어났다. 그것은 거의 한국 함대를 파괴하는 결과를 낳았다.[3]

배경

이 전투에 앞서, 전 해군 사령관 이순신은 일본의 음모로 인해 자리에서 물러났다. 경험이 적은 원균은 이씨 대신 승진했다. 원균은 8월 17일 전 함대 200여 척과 함께 부산으로 출항했다.[4]

전투

한국 함대는 1597년 8월 20일 부산 근처에 도착했다. 날이 저물려고 할 때, 그들은 500척에서 1,000척의 일본 배들을 만났다. 원균은 적 함대에 대한 총공격을 명령했으나 일본군은 후퇴하여 조선인들이 추격할 수 있도록 하였다. 한 척은 쫓아가고 한 척은 후퇴하는 등 몇 차례 오락가락한 끝에 일본군은 마지막으로 한 바퀴 돌아 30척의 배를 파괴하고 한국 함대를 산산조각 냈다.[3]

원나라의 부하들은 가덕에 정박하고, 시마즈 요시히로 휘하의 적군 3천 명에게 매복되어 있는 곳을 찾기 위해 뭍으로 뛰어갔다. 그들은 400명의 군인과 몇 척의 선박을 잃었다.[3]

원정화는 가덕에서 거제와 칠촌섬 칠촌량 사이의 해협으로 남북으로 후퇴했다. 그러자 원균은 자신의 기함대로 물러가 아무도 만나려 하지 않았다. 전 함대가 일주일 내내 해협에 앉아 있었다.[3]

일본 지휘관들은 8월 22일 한국인에 대한 합동 공격을 계획하기 위해 소집되었다. 시마즈 요시히로는 부하 2000명을 태우고 거제로 향했는데, 거제는 아래 한국 함대가 내려다보이는 북서해안에 배치했다.[3]

8월 28일 밤, 500척의 일본 함대가 해협에 진입하여 공격했다. 새벽이 되자 거의 모든 한국 선박이 파괴되었다.[3]

원균은 본토로 도망쳤지만 부하들을 따라가지 못했다. 일본인이 그를 찾을 때까지 그는 소나무 밑에 앉았다. 그의 머리가 잘린 것으로 추정된다.[3]

이억기도 전투 중에 물에 빠져 죽었다.[3]

여파

배설은 8월 28일 파괴되기 전에 12척의 선박을 해협 아래 더 먼 입구로 옮겨 간신히 탈출했다. 배설은 일제가 도착하기 전에 한산도의 진영에 불을 질렀다. 그 후 그는 남은 12척의 배와 함께 서쪽으로 항해했는데, 그 배들은 모두 한국 해군의 몫이었다.[3]
