카볼릭 비누(carbolic soap)는 때때로 붉은 비누라고 불리기도 하는데, 카볼릭산 및/또는 크레스틸산을 함유하고 있는 가벼운 살균 비누로, 둘 다 석탄 타르나 석유원에서 유래한 페놀이다.[1][2]

1834년 독일의 화학자 프리드리브 페르디난드 룬지는 카불산이라고도 알려진 페놀을 발견했는데, 그는 콜타르에서 불순한 형태로 추출했다. 1865년 8월, 조셉 리스터 박사는 카트 바퀴가 다리 위를 지나간 후 복합 골절을 당한 글래스고 왕립 의무실의 열한 살 소년의 상처에 카볼릭산 용액에 담근 보풀 조각을 발랐다. 4일 후, 그는 패드를 새로 단장하여 감염이 발생하지 않았음을 발견하였고, 총 6주 후에 소년의 뼈가 다시 융화의 위험 없이 융합된 것을 발견하고 놀랐다.[3][4]

카볼릭 비누의 가장 초기 제조사 중 하나는 F. C. Calvert와 Company of England, Manchester, 1859년에 설립되었고 1965년에 Unilever에 인수되었다.[5][6] 미국에서 카불 비누 제조 면허는 제임스 뷰찬과 컴퍼니가 보유하고 있었다.[7] 1894년 제1회 Viscount Leverhulme인 William Lever는 시장에 카볼릭 비누의 Lifebuoy 브랜드를 소개했다.[8][9]

이 비누의 특징 중 하나는 진한 분홍색에서 붉은색까지인데, 이것은 비누에 카불릭 비누로 지정하기 위해 비누에 첨가되어 있다. 카불릭 비누가 일반 대중에게 처음 소개되었을 때 유일하게 사용 가능한 살균 비누였기 때문에 붉은 색의 첨가는 중요한 것으로 여겨졌다. 카볼릭산은 다양한 산업 및 소비자 제품 용도에 사용되며 피부 자극제가 될 수 있다.[10]

적십자사와 다른 구호단체에 의해 일상적인 위생을 위해 여전히 재난 피해자들에게 배포되고 있다.[11]
