Anglo-Celtic

앵글로-셀트족은 주로 영국과 아일랜드인 출신이다.[1] 이 개념은 주로 영국, 아일랜드, 특히 호주 이외의 지역에서 관련성이 있지만, 캐나다, 미국, 뉴질랜드, 남아프리카에서도 사용되고 있는데, 이 곳에는 상당한 디아스포라가 위치해 있다.

이 용어는 앵글로-와 형용사 켈트어의 합성어다. 앵글로-는 영어를[2] 의미하는 앵글스(Angels)는 제1천년 중반에 영국(주로 지금의 영국)에 정착한 게르만 민족에서 유래되었다. 영국(옛 영어: Engla land 또는 orla land)[3]이라는 이름은 이 사람들로부터 유래되었다. 켈트족은 [4]이런 맥락에서 아일랜드, 스코틀랜드, 웨일스, 맨섬, 콘월 사람들을 가리킨다.

기록된 사용법은 적어도 19세기 중반으로 거슬러 올라간다. 앵글로-셀트(이 경우 '앙글로-셀트'로 발음됨)라는 이름의 신문이 1846년 아일랜드 캐번 카운티에서 창간되었다. 1869년 간행물에서 이 용어는 전 세계 아일랜드 및 영국계 사람들에게 더 적합한 용어로서 앵글로색슨과 대조되었다.

현대 영국인과 브리타닉 인종에 적용되는 "앙글로 색슨"은 모든 공평한 학자들이 총체적인 잘못된 관점을 생각하는데 있어서 나와 동의할 것이라고 믿는다. 영국의 인구 그 자체에도 큰 켈트족의 요소가 있다는 것을 증명할 수 있다면, 영국 섬들의 일반적인 인구뿐만 아니라 미국과 오스트랄라시아의 영어권 민족들에 대해서도 여전히 더 의심할 여지가 없다. 영국인들조차 앵글로색슨족보다는 오히려 앵글로색슨족이고, 여전히 더 확실한 것은 앵글로색슨족보다 더 정확한 용어인데, 스코틀랜드인, 웨일스인을 포함한 영국 국적뿐만 아니라, 그 형성의 주요 요소인 브리타닉족에게도 말이다..[5]

이 용어는 영국 제도의 대체 용어인 앵글로-셀틱 섬이라는 용어에 붙는다.[6] 이 용어로 1914년 아일랜드 유니온주의 발라드에서 볼 수 있다.

In practice it would be easy to argue that if Ireland, Mann and Great Britain are Anglo-Celtic Isles their peoples must be Anglo-Celts. This is just another way of saying they are British. The obvious answer is to choose a neutral geographical term that can be understood world-wide as referring to these islands. That rules out vague terms like the 'Atlantic Isles' or the 'European Isles'. The 'North Atlantic Isles' sounds like Newfoundland or Greenland to North American ears, and the 'North Europe Isles' excludes Iceland. We are drawn inevitable to the 'West European Isles' as the simple statement of geographical fact. This is why I believe there is no co-incidence that the Irish and the Manx choose it.
