NGC 6503은 국부 보이드(Local Void)라고 불리는 우주 영역의 가장자리에 위치한 왜소[6] 나선 은하다.왜소 은하수는 3만 광년에 걸쳐 있으며 드라코(용) 별자리에서 약 1700만 광년 떨어져 있다.나선은하는 특히 나선팔 사이로 가스의 밝은 붉은 영역을 볼 수 있는 다채롭다.밝은 파란색 영역에는 형성되고 있는 별들이 포함되어 있다.짙은 갈색 먼지 부위는 은하의 팔과 중심에 있다.[7]

NGC 6503에는 KK 242로 알려진 알려진 한 개의 알려진 위성 은하가 있다.약 300만 개의 태양 질량을 가진 KK 242는 왜소 불규칙 은하(dIrr)와 왜소 불규칙 은하(dSph)의 경계에 있다.[8]
