NGC 4237은 약 6000만 광년 떨어진 코마테[4] 베레니스 별자리에 위치한 편평한[2] 나선 은하다[3].[5]이 은하는 1783년[6] 12월 30일 천문학자 윌리엄 허셜에 의해 발견되었으며 처녀자리 성단의 일원이다.[7][8][9]라이너 은하와 세이페르트 은하로도 분류된다.[10][3]
NGC 4237은 중성 원자 수소(H I)가 부족한 것으로 보인다.이는 M87에서 큰 투사거리와 처녀자리 은하단 평균에 가까운 방사상 속도와 결합하면 은하계가 은하단 중심을 통과하는 고 방사상 궤도에 있을 수 있음을 시사한다.[11]
