에린은 컬러휠에 그린과 스프링 그린의 중간쯤 되는 색이다. 아일랜드의 시적 이름인 에린(Erin)의 이름을 따서 지은 것이다.

색깔을 묘사하기 위해 "erin"이라는 단어를 가장 일찍 사용한 것 중 하나는 Jane Johnston Schoolcraft (1800–1842)의 시에 나타난다. '소나무에게'라는 제목의 시에서 그녀는 "잉글랜드의 모든 나무가 밝은 것은 아니다, 녹색과 빛의 잔디밭은 기억하기엔 너무 달지 않다. / 이 소중한 형태의 북쪽 하늘처럼"[2]이라고 쓰고 있다.
