칸토어는 달의 저편에 있는 북반구에 위치한 달 충돌 분화구다.분화구의 바깥 테두리는 육각형 모양이 뚜렷하고 남북 방향으로 약간 길다.내부 벽은 서쪽 테라스를 따라 층층이 늘어나지만, 서쪽 테라스는 그렇지 않다.바닥의 중간 지점에 낮은 중앙 봉우리가 있다.

칸토어를 둘러싼 지형은 많은 작은 분화구로 인해 심한 충격을 받는다.오래되고 심하게 침식된 분화구 H. G. 웰스는 북서쪽에 위치해 있다.남동쪽으로는 키디누가 있다.

관례에 따라 이러한 특징들은 달 지도에서 칸토어와 가장 가까운 분화구 중간 지점의 측면에 글자를 배치함으로써 확인된다.
