2013년 1월 22일 조 앤 에머슨(Jo Ann Emerson)이 사임한 후 2013년 6월 4일 미주리주 제8대 의회 선거구에 대한 특별 선거가 실시되었습니다.[2] 공화당과 민주당은 경선 없이 자체 후보를 선정했습니다.[3]
특별선거 부재자투표 청구 기한은 2013년 5월 29일까지였습니다.[4] 2013년 5월 27일 남동 미주리 주립대학-리버 캠퍼스에서 TV로 중계된 후보자 토론회가 열렸는데, 후보자가 참석하지 않은 동안 모든 정당 후보자들이 참여했습니다.[5] 2013년 6월 4일 총선에서 공화당의 제이슨 스미스는 67.1%의 득표율을 얻어 민주당의 스티브 호지스(27.4%), 헌법의 더그 에냐트(3.6%), 자유주의자 빌 슬랜츠(1.5%)[6][1]를 제쳤습니다.
