역사

라디오 프로그래밍은 시라큐스의 AM 방송국 WSYR-WMAC가 대학 캠퍼스에 새로운 송신기 부지를 건설한 해인 1931년부터 대학 캠퍼스에서 시작되었다. 이 역은 크라우즈 칼리지에서 시작된 시러큐스 대학 프로그래밍을 운반할 때만 WMAC 콜사인을 채용했다.[6][7] 1933년 말, 호출 부호는 WSYR-WSYU로 변경되었고, 현재 WSYU는 대학 프로그램을 방송할 때 사용된다.[8] 1940년, 이중 통화 문자의 사용이 종료되었고, 이 역은 단지 WSYR이 되었다.

1947년 4월 13일 실험용 저전력 FM 방송국이 WJIV-FM으로 88.1MHz에서 방송을 시작하였으며, 주로 SU 라디오 학생들을 위한 실용 워크숍으로 진행되었다.[9][10] 3개월 후 FCC의 면허 갱신으로 학생들은 WAER(W Alpha Epsilon Rho)로 전화 부호 서신을 변경할 수 있었다.[11][12][13] 호출부호도 '항상 훌륭한 라디오'로 해석되었다.[14] 제너럴 일렉트릭(General Electric)의 재정 지원을 받은 스튜디오는 카네기 도서관 바로 남쪽에 있는 올림푸스 산으로 가는 계단 근처의 조립식 주택 세트인 라디오 하우스에 위치해 있었다.[11] GE는 저전력 FM 송신기를 사용하여 교육방송을 개척하고자 1948년 15만 개에 달하는 설정을 제공하였고,[15] 시러큐스 대학에 이러한 종류의 송신기로 실험을 의뢰하였다.[6][16]

이 사업은 Kenneth G. Bartlett 라디오 학장이 감독했으며 Lawrence Myers Jr. 교수가 교직원 관리자로 일했다.[10] 방송 스케줄을 짜기 위해 곧 학생 스태프가 임명되었다.[15][17] 방송에는 클래식 음악, 스포츠, 뉴스, 헨드릭스 채플의 종교 프로그램, 즉석 대학 뉴스, 학생 활동, 공식 대학 행사 등이 포함되었다. 이 역은 강의 시간을 피하기 위해 오후 4시부터 10시까지 운영되었다.[17][18][19][20]

1983년까지만 해도 WAER는 학생 운영이었지만 1983년 논란이 된 결정에서 SU는 WAER를 인수해 전임 전문 인력을 고용해 운영과 학생들을 양성했다.[9]

2017년에는 '미라클 마이크: "WAER 라디오의 불가능한 역사와 역사 제작자들"은 WAER의 70년 역사를 만성화했다.[11] 이 다큐멘터리는 스콧 맥팔레인과 키스 코브랜드가 연구·제작했으며, 2019년 뉴욕주 AP언론협회상을 수상했다.[16][22][23]

이전에는 보조 서비스 부서의 구성원이었던 이 역은 2021년 7월 1일부터 S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications의 일부가 되었다. 그 역은 계속해서 795 Ostrom Ave에 수용되고 있다.[13]

WAER 스포츠 스태프는 전적으로 홈 앤드 어웨이 게임에 관한 보고를 하는 학생들로 구성되어 있다.[30][31] 시러큐스 대학 축구, 남자 농구, 남자 라크로스의 플레이 바이 플레이는 물론 매일 스포츠 업데이트를 제공한다. 각 방송 30분 전(카운트다운에서 킥오프, 팁오프, 페이스오프로) 하프타임 세그먼트(오렌지 어웨이스트)와 게임 후 마무리(더 더블 연장전)로 게임 전 쇼가 시작된다. 더블 타임아웃은 모든 축구, 농구, 라크로스 경기가 끝난 후에 방송된다.[32]

음악과는 올해의 National Jazz Programmer of the Year의 복수 수상자인 Eric Cohen이 주관한다.[24][25] 래리 호이트는 WAER의 커먼 스레드의 오랜 목소리 이다. 코라 토머스는 사무 감독관으로 오전 6시부터 8시까지 WAER에서 일요일 아침 방송을 하기 때문에 복음 음악 프로그램을 운영하고 있다.

WERW와의 파트너십

WAER는 2010년 2월부터 시러큐스 대학의 WERW 1570과 제휴하고 있다. WERW는 학생이 운영하는 자유형 방송국으로 아이튠즈 라디오를 통해서만 6년 만에 2017년 방송에 복귀했다.[33] 이 파트너십은 WAER의 Real College Radio라는 주간 3시간짜리 쇼를 만들어냈는데, WERW DJ의 엄선된 코호트들이 번갈아 진행하는 것이다. 장르는 성인 앨범 얼터너티브(AAA)이며, 각 DJ는 WAER 오퍼링에 그들만의 새로운 맛을 가져다 준다.
