파낙스(인생) 속은 아랄리아과[1](ivy)과에 속한다. 파낙스 종은 진세노사이드와 긴토닌이 있는 것이 특징이다. 파낙스는 동아시아와 동북아메리카의 고전적인 분포를 가진 대략 60개의 식물군 중 하나이다.[2] 게다가, 이 분리 분포는 비대칭적이다. 왜냐하면 속 속의 ~18종 중 오직 2종만이 북아메리카에서 자생하고 있기 때문이다.

어원

그리스어로 "올힐링"을 뜻하는 파낙스라는 이름은 "파나세아"와 같은 기원을 공유하고 있으며, 칼 리나에우스가 한의학에서 널리 쓰이는 것을 알고 있었기 때문에 이 속주에 사용되었다.
