NGC 5584는 처녀자리에 있는 막대[8] 나선 은하다.1881년 7월 27일 미국의 천문학자 E. E. Barnard에 의해 발견되었다.[10]세페이드 가변 측정을 사용한 거리 측정은 7천 5백만 광년의 추정치를 제공하는 [6]반면, 적색거성 가지 접근법의 끝은 7천 3백 4십 광년의 거리를 산출한다.[7]그것은 1,637 km/s의 태양 중심 방사 속도로 후퇴하고 있다.[4]
