우다야르(Udayar)는 인도 타밀나두 주에서 복수의 카스트들이 사용하는 호칭이다.[1]

어원

타밀에서 우다야르(Udayar)라는 단어는 토지나 왕국을 소유하는 자에서와 같이 주 또는 소유자를 의미한다.[citation needed]

현재현황

셀바 라즈에 따르면, 우다야르는 벨랄라[2] 공동체보다 "사회적으로 더 겸손하다"고 하지만 쿨랄라, 칼라와 함께 마라바 카스트들을 형성하는데, 이들은 람나드, 마라바르 국가로 다양하게 알려진 지역에서 상당히 지배적이다.[3]

종교

람나드와 푸두코타이, 마두라이, 살렘, 나막칼, 탄조레, 트리치 인근 지역에서는 17세기 포르투갈 예수회 선교사 겸 순교자인 존 데 브리토를 기리는 오리우르 성지 숭배에서 두 동료 마라바르 카스트 집단이 눈에 띈다. 라지는 브리토 컬트들의 눈에 띄는 특징은 종교 계열보다는 카스트 정체성에 초점을 맞춘다는 점이라며 종교 계열과 상관없이 카스트 그룹 멤버들은 브리토를 자신들의 씨족으로 여긴다.[4]

몇몇 우다야인들은 로마 가톨릭 기독교도들이다.[5][4]
