선장 비욘드의 세 번째 앨범인 여명폭발은 1977년에 발매되었다.그 밴드는 4년 전에 해체되었지만, 워너 브라더스사는 해체되었다. 레코드사는 밴드의 오리지널 레이블인 Capricorn Records와 계약을 체결하고, 밴드 멤버들에게 재회를 요청하는 연락을 취했다.[3]오리지널 멤버인 바비 칼드웰은 드럼으로 돌아왔지만, 오리지널 리드 보컬리스트 로드 에반스는 광범위한 문의 끝에 연락이 닿지 않았다.비욘드 선장은 오디션을 열고 윌리 다페른을 후임으로 선발했다.[3]
"Dawn Vollation"이라는 곡은 앨범 세션 중에 녹음되었지만, 타이틀을 빼앗았음에도 불구하고, 최종 앨범에서 삭제되었다.[3]
CD reissues split "Breath of Fire, Part 1 & Part 2" into two tracks (subtitled "A Speck Within a Sphere" and "Alone in the Cosmos", respectively), and "Oblivion" into three tracks (with the preceding "Space Interlude" and succeeding "Space Reprise" being the sound effects and percussion that bookend the main section of "Oblivion").
